Not as good as hoped. :(
Like many, I was hoping this guide book would be as good as the Fallout 3 guide. Sadly, it falls FAR short.
Starting to play Borderlands, you will have many questions about weapon statistics and how they compare, which skill tree items are worth spending points on and which aren't, class mods, and more. None of the questions I had were answered by the book. At least not that I could find.
Which brings me to my second point. There is no index, and the table of contents for the actual gameplay part of the book consists only of 4 chapter listings. So, if you need help during a mission, expect to spend lots of time flipping page by page through the book until you find the mission you want. Usually, it takes less time to just figure it out yourself in the game.
If you can manage to actually find the mission you are on, the book will provide an ok walkthrough, and a nice map that has the exact locations of where the quest items are.
About half the book is dedicated to nice descriptions of guns and enemies. The gun descriptions are fairly useless but the enemy descriptions can be helpful in giving each one's weaknesses.
If you really get into Borderlands, its OK to get for the Amazon price. Just don't expect great things from it.
An average guide to an Amazing Game
This is only the 2nd guide I've bought in about 5 years now. After being amazed by the content and quality that the GOTY Fallout 3 Guide had, I was hoping that this guide would be as near as good.
It's not. While the guide does it's job, it tells you what to do, suggestions, and many sections for bios, information on guns, enemies etc. it just doesn't do a great job at it. While I spent hours combing thru the Fallout 3 guide, or as a kid, how I remember I would spend even more hours on those "Pokemon" guides...here I spent not even an hour on. I occasionally take glimpses especially for side quests, and to make sure I don't skip anything important.
This is an average guide at best. For a game of this calibur, I wish there were other guides available to me at the time of purchase, but as I said, this guide does it's job.
Decent Guide but nothing special
I have a new rule about only buying strategy guides in hardcover. It seems like if the publisher goes through the effort of making a hardcover edition of their guide they put a great deal of effort in the guide itself.
This book is the last softcover I'm buying and has helped me make up my mind. Its a mediocre strategy guide that does the job and nothing more. I purchased it mainly because I was promised lots of lore for Borderlands which has very little story in the game itself. There is almost no information on the game world and most of what is there is sarcastic and full of jokes to the point where I wonder if their just making it up as they go along for giggles.
The quest guide itself is pretty good but nothing amazing. It was helpful in finding all the claptraps but thats pretty much all I used it for. There was no free form or easter egg section. The information on the different types of guns were pitful. The pictures were very nice though.
Buy this if your a hardcore completionist and sandbox games scare you otherwise pass.
