Star Trek The Original Series - The Complete First SeasonStar Trek The Original Series - The Complete First Season
Buy used from: $50.36
(1966-1969) - Yes, yes, it had a massive life after cancellation. Still doesn't change the fact that after 3 seasons, and despite a huge fan outcry, the network cut short the Enterprise's five year mission. Nevertheless, this is the one which gives blind hope to fans of aborted TV shows. STAR TREK was both thought-provoking and cheesy, yup, and undeniably a classic.
Kolchak - The Night StalkerKolchak - The Night Stalker
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $19.96
(1974-1975) - Greatly influencing future paranormal shows like the X-FILES, this one has Chicago crime reporter Carl Kolchak (Darren McGavin) pursuing stories and continually bumping into the supernatural. Get your creepy thrills, 1970's style.
The Secrets of Isis - The Complete SeriesThe Secrets of Isis - The Complete Series
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $14.33
(1975-1976) - "O Mighty Isis!" Gorgeous JoAnna Cameron plays Andrea Thomas, a bespectacled high school teacher who gets hold of an ancient Egyptian amulet which transforms her - in time of need - into the powerful Egyptian goddess dressed out in a sexy white miniskirt. And, of course, she battles evil. Remember her crossovers with Shazam?
Space 1999 - 30th Anniversary Edition Megaset (17DVD)Space 1999 - 30th Anniversary Edition Megaset (17DVD)
Buy new: $47.99 / Used from: $38.99
(1975-1978) - Okay, this one might be a bit too creaky for today's audience. But, back in the day, this one firmly had my eyeballs. In the year 1999, the moon is blasted out of orbit. And the unprepared crew of the lunar colony Moonbase Alpha finds itself struggling for survival as the moon hurtles ever deeper into unknown space. Starred Martin Landau and Barbara Bain.
Battlestar Galactica - The Complete Epic Series (Limited Edition Cylon Head Packaging)Battlestar Galactica - The Complete Epic Series (Limited Edition Cylon Head Packaging)
Buy used from: $44.79
(1978-1979) - No, dammit, the original series isn't as smart, as slick, or as thought-provoking and emotional as the new version. But it was still fun, and, for its time, was a pretty decent TV space opera. And, yep, it boasted Dirk Benedict as the original cocky, cigar-chomping Starbuck.
Voyagers! - The Complete SeriesVoyagers! - The Complete Series
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $26.68
(1982-1983) - Tune in as Voyager Phineas Bogg, armed with a time-travelling gold watch, and his accidental partner, 12 year old Jeffrey Jones, journey thru time, averting temporal disasters in history. I was so sure this was gonna make a star of Jon-Erik Hexum, before his untimely passing.
Hooperman -The Complete SeriesHooperman -The Complete Series by John Ritter
(1987-1989) - In this 30 minute dramedy, John Ritter plays San Francisco policeman Harry Hooperman who ends up owning a run-down apartment building and gains custody of a mean dog.
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - The Complete SeriesThe Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - The Complete Series
Buy new: $72.99 / Used from: $30.99
(1993-1994) - Fun, tongue-in-cheek western. Bruce Campbell, a personal favorite of mine and yours, rode the saddle in the Old West and fought dastardly hombres, who were sometimes equipped with non-standard (okay, futuristic) gadgetry.
Earth 2 - The Complete SeriesEarth 2 - The Complete Series
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $13.09
(1994-1995) - Talk about wagon train to the stars, NBC let another good one get away with EARTH-2. Their space ship sabotaged, a colony of settlers crashlands on their targeted planet, yes, but on the far side of that world. Surviving is hard enough but then they discover a spy in their midst. Excellent, well-written series, with standouts Debrah Farantino and Clancy Brown.
Space Above and Beyond - The Complete SeriesSpace Above and Beyond - The Complete Series
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $14.99
(1995-1996) - In the same vein as STARSHIP TROOPERS, this gritty sci-fi series focuses on a rookie squad of space marines, the Wildcards, as Earth fights back against mysterious aliens called the Chigs. Damn you, Fox, for cancelling this one!
American Gothic - Complete SeriesAmerican Gothic - Complete Series
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $23.98
(1995-1996) - Effectively creepy Southern Gothic horror. Gary Cole was a standout as the sinister Sheriff Buck, and, for a kid, Lucas Black as Caleb had an intensity and a presence.
Sports Night - The Complete Series Boxed SetSports Night - The Complete Series Boxed Set
Buy used from: $21.00
(1998-2000) - Aaron Sorkin brought his vaunted storytelling talent to this backstage look at an ESPN's SportsCenter-type show. Great acting, Sorkin's words, ethical dilemmas, and sports - you'd think this one would've lasted longer.
Freaks and Geeks - The Complete SeriesFreaks and Geeks - The Complete Series
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $30.97
(1999-2000) - McKinley High in the 1980's, and teenaged angst was never better played out Linda Cardellini should've been a break out star after this. Instead, the show got canned and she ended up playing Velma in the SCOOBY DOO movies. Shame.
Popular - The Complete First SeasonPopular - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $9.99
(1999-2001) - Brooke is the most popular girl in school. Samantha is noncomforming and disliked by the popular clique. Brooke and Sam detest each other (but they're both cute). Then they find out their parents are marrying each other. Ah, teenage existence. So sad when this one ended.
Once and Again - The Complete First SeasonOnce and Again - The Complete First Season
Buy used from: $37.49
(1999-2002) - Heartfelt and sensitive drama starring Bill Campbell and Sela Ward as, respectively, a divorced dad and a soon-to-be-divorced mom who begin a romance. This complicates their lives and that of their children. Great ensemble cast.
Dark Angel - The Complete First SeasonDark Angel - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $3.42
(2000-2002) - This is the series that made Jessica Alba a star. Set in a near dystopian future, a genetically engineered girl named Max (Alba) bursts from the confines of a military installation and attempts to live out a life of freedom and choice. But the government will insist on playing silly buggers.
The Tick - The Entire SeriesThe Tick - The Entire Series
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $7.79
(2001-2002) - Almost as charming as the animated version, and just as off-the-wall, this live action series does right with the Tick. Patrick Warburton is righteous as the Big Blue Bug of Justice. Batmanuel subs for Die Fledermaus.
Firefly - The Complete SeriesFirefly - The Complete Series
Buy new: $38.49 / Used from: $19.99
(2002-2004) - From the pen of Buffy scribe Joss Whedon, this one's a wild, rootin'-tootin' sci-fi western, made exceedingly watchable by Whedon's usual brand of wit, humor, and involving plots. Vivid cast, headed up by the straight-faced Nathan Fillion. Morena Baccarin heads my list as TV's hottest hottie. Gone too soon!
Keen Eddie - The Complete SeriesKeen Eddie - The Complete Series
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $17.88
(2003-2004) - This one's a quirky police procedural. Mark Valley is Detective Eddie Arlette, an American cop assigned to England to work with a stodgy British police force. However, Sienna Miller, as Eddie's roommate, isn't at all stodgy.
Tru Calling - The Complete First SeasonTru Calling - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $43.99 / Used from: $8.89
(2003-2005) - Props to Buffy for being the top dog Slayer, but sexy, rebellious Faith didn't exactly embarass herself. Eliza Dushku made an indelible mark in BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and it paved the way to her own starring vehicle. For two seasons, Eliza played Tru Davies - a medical grad student forced to work at a morgue - who discovers the power to relive a day and thus change events.
Joan of Arcadia - The First SeasonJoan of Arcadia - The First Season
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $19.98
(2003-2005) - Amber Tamblyn made waves as Joan Girardi, a teenager with whom God, in various guises, begins to have conversations. The series also focused muchly on Joan's dad (Joe Mantegna), Arcadia's new chief of police. What can I say, it was a great show.
Wonderfalls - The Complete SeriesWonderfalls - The Complete Series
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $14.94
(2004) - Inanimate objects suddenly begin talking to a rude and cranky (but cute) young woman clerking in a Niagara Falls curio shop. As directed by the objects, her acts of spontaneity lead to unexpected and sometimes quite wonderful results. Quirky and beguiling and showcasing the talented Caroline Dhaveras, WONDERFALLS never really had a chance.
Veronica Mars - The Complete First SeasonVeronica Mars - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $42.99 / Used from: $12.66
(2004-2007) - Yes, I know it lasted 3 years, and that's great. Funny, thoughtful, and addictive, this show still should've lasted longer. Compelling story arcs and an excellent cast, with Kirsten Bell and Enrico Colantoni simply dazzling as the daughter-and-dad combo who staffed the Mars Investigations agency. Jason Dohring also rocked.
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip - The Complete SeriesStudio 60 on the Sunset Strip - The Complete Series
Buy new: $37.99 / Used from: $12.57
(2006-2007) - Too high-falutin'? Not funny enough? Whatever. I loved this show and was fairly upset when it got canned. Best things about it: Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford's amazing chemistry; the sexy, pious, scintillating Harriet Hayes as played by Sarah Paulson. And then there's Sorkin's writing. Did I mention Perry and Whitford's chemistry?
Dead Like Me - The Complete First SeasonDead Like Me - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $8.97
(2003-2004) - Morbid college dropout Georgia (George) Lass is mortally flattened by a toilet seat. To her surprise, she's then tapped as a grim reaper in the afterlife, collecting souls her new vocation. But, in death, things are still complicated. Smart, witty, full of deadpan humor, this series too soon got hammered with its own toilet seat.
Misfits of Science [VHS]Misfits of Science [VHS]
Buy used from: $14.95
(1985) - VHS. Ok, this one was a short-lived addiction and would now be extremely dated. But, still...Dr. Billy Hayes assembles a group of superpowered folks - a fellow scientist who can shrink down to 7", a telekinetic teen, a guitar player who has electrical powers, and an Iceman - and off they go to fight crime and stuff. Featuring an early sighting of Courtney Cox.
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - The Complete Epic SeriesBuck Rogers in the 25th Century - The Complete Epic Series
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.53
(1979-1981) - A spacecraft mishap puts 20th Century astronaut William "Buck" Rogers in a state of suspended animation. He wakes up 500 years later and proceeds to become a hero for a new century. I liked Buck Rogers and Hawk, but, ah, man, I remember crushing big time on Colonel Wilma Deering (Erin Gray). And Princess Ardala wasn't that bad, either.
Sapphire and Steel - The Complete SeriesSapphire and Steel - The Complete Series
Buy new: $54.49 / Used from: $11.59
(1979-1982) - Here's a bit of British weird. Energy entities take human form and venture into the inexplicable and go about preventing supernatural and sci-fi calamities. The f/x might come off as subpar nowadays but the involving and cerebral stories make up for the lack. Plus, David McCallum and Joanna Lumley are great.
The Greatest American Hero - The Complete Series (Free Cape and Notebook Included)The Greatest American Hero - The Complete Series (Free Cape and Notebook Included)
Buy new: $65.99 / Used from: $52.99
(1981-1983) - In a UFO encounter, a high school teacher ends up with an alien superhero costume which grants him amazing powers. But then he loses the suit's instruction manual...Tell you what, superheroics was never so much fun as when Ralph Hinkley, possibly the klutziest caped crusader ever, did his crime fighting thing.
Threshold - The Complete SeriesThreshold - The Complete Series
Buy new: $37.99 / Used from: $29.29
(2005) - Yet another well written sci-fi show bites the dust, and this one had the gorgeous Carla Gugino in it, for Pete's sake! It turns out, there are contingency plans for first contact with E.T.s. Dr. Molly Anne Caffrey and her think tank staff are tapped to deal with an extraterrestrial space ship discovered in the Atlantic Ocean. Is it friend or foe?
The Flash - The Complete SeriesThe Flash - The Complete Series
Buy new: $37.99 / Used from: $19.99
(1990-1991) - I felt the costume was a bit too bulky, but that really was my only complaint. Great special effects showcase Barry Allen's stupendous super speed as the Flash cleans up Central City in a hurry. But the scarlet speedster's super power was never more fun than when he used it to clean up his room.
Adventures of Spiderman: Deadly Dust [VHS]Adventures of Spiderman: Deadly Dust [VHS]
Buy used from: $12.75
(1978-1979) My time capsule television viewing of choice. After the TV movie came the series, which turned out to be pretty decent. Or is that just nostalgia talking? I remember an evil Spidey clone somewhere...This VHS collects the first 2 episodes ("Deadly Dust") only.
Now and AgainNow and Again
(1999-2000) Quirky and wonderful. When loving dad and husband Michael Wiseman is killed in a subway accident, he really isn't. The U.S. government plants his brain and consciousness in a new, genetically enhanced body and puts him to work. This, even as Michael pines for his family, who doesn't know he's still alive. Bob your head to the smooth theme song. But beware the Eggman!
Birds of Prey: The Complete SeriesBirds of Prey: The Complete Series
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $19.00
(2002-2003) This is the future and, in New Gotham, Batman has vanished. But he leaves behind a daughter, who now prowls around as the Huntress. Teaming with the crippled Oracle (formerly Batgirl) and clairvoyant newcomer Dinah Lance, these Birds of Prey hunt down Gotham's worst. I was SO bummed when this show got axed. An AWESOME series.
