Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
Alexander, the charismatic founder of the English Gardening School, and coauthor Sneesby have compiled a highly detailed resource guide aimed at providing valuable assistance in envisioning a garden plan from scratch. Important aspects of making a garden are covered, from walls and walkways to stairways, gateways, and such architectural elements as gazebos and arbors. Each topic is presented with an array of design possibilities illustrated and explained. Offered along with traditional ideas for paths using stone and brick are inventive solutions like a rammed-earth paving pattern. Each chapter features a clearly written section on practicalities to help demystify technical considerations, with instructions included for calculating the size of boards and joists for a deck, for instance. While some projects, such as waterproofing a pond, are not given in-depth treatment, do-it-yourself types will find a great deal of useful advice and support. Alice Joyce
