Weak connection with iPhone; doesn't link reliably with sensors (read the update!!)2

4/2/2009. I was very excited to be able to use my iphone to monitor my exercise progress; I bought the SmHeart Link without thinking twice. I paired it with the Garmin 010-10644-00 Speed/Cadence Sensor and the Garmin GARMIN 010-10997-00 Heart Rate Monitor. Linking the SmHeart Link with the Iphone takes some time, but it wouldn't be a problem if you only had to do it once. The link is actually weak and I end up linking it several times during a typical 1-hour exercise. The communication between the heart monitor and the SmHeart Link is seamless, but the communication between the cadence/speed sensor and the SmHeart Link is full of bugs. The pairing drops frequently and the reading is erroneous, as both the RPMs and Speed monitors feed from the cadence sensor only (the speed reads "0" when I stop pedalling even though I am actually going at 20 miles per hour!). My firmware is updated, the battery is loaded, all devices are on and running.

UPDATE: 6/11/2009, customer support is really excellent. It took them less than 24 hours to answer with basic troubleshooting steps, and an invitation to contact them at any time (I even got a cell phone number!!) for step-by-step directions to set up the device properly. I didn't make the call yet, but the advice I got over email was helpful. The device works, although I must confess that I still find it somewhat more awkward than I expected when I bought it. I haven't tried it outdoors yet (so far only on the trainer).

As the representative sugested, working with wireless devices can be more complicated than most people think; I'm willing to learn the tricks, but I wondered if it wouldn't have been a better idea to spend more money on a Garmin computer to go with the garmin sensors.

Very happy with SMHeart Link5
I've used the smheart link for about 3 months now and have been very happy with it and the results. I use it with my Garmin heart belt. Trust me, the smheart link is a million times better than trying to track your results with a Garmin watch. The only problems I've had are when the battery levels on my ipod touch and the smheart link are low. The ipod touch gets a bit squirely with a wifi connection when your battery level is less than 10%.

While I use the New Leaf system to track my results, I recently noticed the akers of smheart link have added several other tracking partners like MapMyFitness (www.mapymyfitness.com) and TrainingPeaks (www.trainingpeaks.com). You might consider using these services to track your results. I hope they add their own solution like the Nike+ site.

Great product, even better support4
I started out to buy a heart monitor, but ended up buying an iPhone when I found this tool. And now, I'm very satisfied with both. One inherent risk for any early adopter of new technology is the possibility of bugs and glitches. This product is no exception, and in my case, there were some pairing issues at start up. But, when a company stands behind its products and provides you with OUTSTANDING support, the risk becomes minimal and is well worth taking. As a former Customer Service manager at a major retailer, I can truly appreciate the support this company provided me. For me, the product works as advertised and is helping me manage my workout data. Even with the pairing issues, which turned out to be the iPhone dropping the network apparently from surrounding interference, I don't regret buying it and would recommend it to everyone.
