Betrock's Essential Guide to Palms
I have been a lover of Palms for many years, but we have lived in the colder North New Jersey area where it would be tough to grow them; However, we now live in the coastal area of Delaware, outside of the hardiness zone for most palms, but after reading this book we have discovered a handful of palms that may grow in our area. The book includes a reference guide featuring palms that survive brief periods below freezing, and sections on microclimates and winter protection show readers how to grow palms in warm temperate locations. A greenhouse checklist will be useful to tropical plant enthusiasts who live in colder climates like ours. This book covers everything a palm grower needs to know, including a step-by-step guide to growing palms from seed. And, unlike many palm books, the photos feature mature palms, making this a good field reference as well. We have thoroughly enjoyed our new Palm book and look forward with delight to growing our Hardy Palms.
New Home-owner
I am new to palms, but this book has turned me into an expert. The book starts out with a brief and interesting history of palms, then moves to culture, care and selection. The heart of the book is a portfolio showing photos of mature palms along with their water needs, minimum temperatures (in Fahrenheit and Celsius), mature heights and other cultural requirements. The photos are beautiful and the text is easy to read. The book also covers site selection, winter protection, fertilizing needs, pests, transplanting, pruning and growing palms from seed. The book even includes a unique "palm finder" that lets you quickly identify the perfect palm for your needs. This feature alone is worth the price of the book. I think this book will appeal to homeowners that are new to palms, but landscapers will want to make this one of their tools of the trade for palm selection. This is a perfect gift for anyone who loves palms.
