Patios have been featured in landscapes for thousands of years, but never have they been more popular than now, as homeowners discover the elegance, long life, and easy maintenance of stone and decorative concrete surfaces. TodayÆs homeowners can build with mosaic tiles just like the ancient Persians, or natural stone like the Greeks, but they also build amazing patios with colored, interlocking concrete pavers cast in geometric shapes, or they can stamp or stain poured concrete for truly amazing effects.
Black & Decker The Complete Guide to Patios is a comprehensive guide that includes an introduction to the most popular building materials: a fool-proof method for design, planning and layout; detailed step-by-step projects to help readers build any one of 12 different types of patios; instructions for building popular patio accessories and features; and tips for maintaining and repairing all types of patios.

Complete deck building book
Before I start any major project, I always purchase a manual to make sure I understand all the requirements and see if there are any new ideas. This is my second Black & Decker building book and it is excellent. The manual covers almost all aspects of the subject from design to building and maintaining a deck. I especially like the step by step construction details for laying out the deck, digging and pouring the piers, constructing the framing, and all other aspects of the project. Building codes are also covered. Of course, local codes variations are not addressed.
I highly recommend this book for any DIYer wanting to build a deck.
