Unlike the heavier stoneware crocks found in many slow cookers, this one is made of lightweight Extreme Temperature Cookware (ETC), also called VersaWare, a stoneware so versatile it can be used on a stovetop, in an oven, under a broiler, and in a microwave. The lid is also made of ETC, which makes the five-quart pot ideal for storing pre-assembled foods in the freezer or refrigerator, and baking covered dishes in the oven. Of course, the round crock also sits in the slow-cooker base, an unusual cradle design featuring four metal legs with rubber feet.

Product Description

The traffic was horrible, your boss was in a bad mood, your muscles ache and you're exhausted from a dog day of work. It's a goodthing you put that beef stew in the slow cooker this morning, because now you have a hot, hearty meal that's been slow cooking all day and it's ready to melt your bad day away. 5-quart removable stoneware provides ample room and is dishwasher-safe. ETC (Extreme Temperature Cookware) allows you to use the stoneware traditionally in the slow cooker base or in the oven to bake, broil or roast foods; saute or reheat food on gas stovetops. Take the ETC stoneware directly from the stovetop to the freezer or refrigerator for fast storage of leftovers. Slow cook a variety of meals, such as chilis, stews, sauces and meats for tender, juicy flavors. A detachable cord enables VersaWare to be used as an elegant serving dish.

Amazon.com Review
A single knob sets the cooker at low, high, and keep warm, a convenient setting for maintaining food at just the right serving temperature.

On the two cook settings, low and high, the pot can slow-cook a wide variety of stews, roasts, and soups, recipes for which are printed in an included 79-page recipe booklet. Meat can be braised first on the stovetop, and casseroles can be browned under the broiler just before serving. Both the base and crock feature loop-style handles for easy lifting. Measuring 9 by 13 by 10-1/2 inches, with internal dimensions of 9-1/2 by 4-1/2 inches, the slow cooker comes with a short, 32-inch cord that removes from the base for storage and lets the entire unit stand alone on a serving buffet. The crock and lid go right into the dishwasher for clean-up. Rival covers the slow cooker with a one-year warranty. --Ann Bieri

Loved mine until the handle broke3
I really liked the fact that it was not Teflon and could be used on cooktop and oven as well as on the slow cooker. I'm now looking for a cast-iron crockpot. That would resolve the only problems I experienced. 1. You could saute on higher heat 2. The crock won't break.

Worst kitchen appliance I've ever owned1
I purchased this item 10 months ago. It has been used approximately 12 times, with generally poor results, and the bottom shattered yesterday during a pot roast. I will not replace it and want to share my reasons for the benefit of anyone else who is considering this cooker.

-I used it once to saute and found that with the restrictions requiring use of low heat setting you just couldn't get enough heat to saute onions, garlic, brown meat, etc. I had to use another pan for all browning.

-There was also a funny melting plastic smell every time the Versaware cooker was used, that overpowered the aroma of cooking food. Not very appetizing.

-I could never cook anything on the low setting- it just didn't cook the food thoroughly.

And then, having the pot shatter during cooking yesterday was the final blow.

West Bend has a similar cooker that has a metal cooking pot with non-stick surface, can go in the oven, has a grill plate bottom and can be used to saute on the stove. I wish I'd known that before I bought this.

CrockPot is great5
The Rival CrockPot is a good buy. I have used it and am happy with the way it cooks. Temperature control is easy and I really like the "warm" feature.
It keeps the food at serving temperature until you are ready to eat.

Good buy.
