Customer Reviews
Good space sim but...
This is my first review for anything, so here we go. Overall I am enjoying this game. The graphics are excellent but not ground breaking by any means. Rarely does Tarr crash but not enough for me to want to throw the game out the window.
I like being able to customize my ship and having different ships to choose from, such as a whole array of weapons, shields, engines, armor types and even special devices you can construct by disassembling existing parts.
The flight controls are good and simple, just as I like it.
Now the only problem I have with this game is the dialog. I believe I'm about halfway through the game and I'm having a hard time keeping up with whats going on in the story. I just get thrown into missions and fighting against aliens and I have no idea why. I do have somewhat of a idea but it's rather vague. They really need to do a better job at explaining the story and describing what events are taking place. From what I can gather the story is really interesting. Just makes me beg for a better understanding. Like telling a story and skipping paragraphs and/or entire pages.
Did some research and found a "language patch" that is suppose to clear the dialog up a bit. To give you an idea what I was talking about, the patch is over 500mb.
OVERALL:
The game play was enjoyable, story wasn't very well explained and it seemed short. Not really excited about this game. Don't think I'll replay it but I'll be looking out for a Tarr Chronicles 2 and hope for better results
I'm running Vista Home premium with 1.8ghz Duo core, 3.5gigs of ram and (a nothing special) Nvidia GeForce 8300gs. Game seemed to run perfect (all high settings )with a few moments of lag here and there.
Decent graphics.
Graphics are what really saved this game. The worst aspect of this game is too much happening at the same time. The dialogue in this game reminded me of the esoteric rant in the Matrix movies, where the Architect is laying it all out for Neo.
Pros:
-Good graphics.
-Intuitive controls.
Cons:
-Steep learning curve, especially on ship customization.
-No in-game tutorials.
-In-game dialogue overlaps and the audio file playback is buggy.
This game apparently did well enough to warrant a prequel - Dark Horizons. But this game was not "fun." It was too technical. I guess gone are days of Freespace 2 or even Freelancer.
Tarr Chronicles
Gameplay can get a little repetitive, but the graphics and controls are really very good. I liked the storyline and plot. Good game overall.
