![]() | Meteos
Buy new: $87.67 / Used from: $14.91 This was the first great DS game, and still is the best. It's an original puzzle game oozing with personality and variety that couldn't be done without a touch screen. The Disney version actually isn't quite as good as the original due to stiffer controls and less variety.
![]() | Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan
Buy used from: $42.00 The Ouendan and Elite Beat Agents games are some of the best and most original rhythm action games ever on any system. They use the DS perfectly. Most people will like all three, but if you have strong aversions to Japanese or American music, you know which ones to avoid. I think the first game has the best music and scenarios, although the latter two are slightly more user-friendly.
![]() | Retro Game Challenge
Buy new: $18.48 / Used from: $13.75 This is a wonderful collection of original games designed with 8-bit aesthetics. Some people may not appreciate it, but all of the games offer new twists on familiar genres, and the challenge is more forgiving but faster-paced.
![]() | Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Buy new: $85.26 / Used from: $18.49 All six Castlevania games on the DS and GBA continue in the spirit of Symphony of the Night, but none of them surpass it. Dawn of Sorrow is the best on the DS despite the maddening amount of grinding required to unlock everything, Order of Ecclesia is about as good, and Portrait of Ruin is the weakest of the three due to flat and repetitious environments, but it's still definitely worth playing.
![]() | New Super Mario Bros.
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $22.23 An original side-scrolling Mario game with elements from pretty much every Mario game to come before it. It isn't as amazing as the games for home consoles, but it's definitely the best original portable Mario game, beating out Super Mario Land 2.
![]() | The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $13.95 It's interesting that Nintendo was able to make a solid Zelda game controlled entirely with the stylus. It's surprising that most of the fun comes from drawing on the in-game map to solve puzzles and find items. This may have been the best game on the DS if the hidden treasures had been more rewarding instead of near-universally worthless. A sequel is on the way.
![]() | Mario Kart DS
Buy new: $29.96 / Used from: $21.23 This is a very solid Mario Kart game. Like the Castlevania games and New Super Mario Bros, it is one of the best games on the DS even though it doesn't use any of the system's unique features compellingly. There are enough games like this that you may want to get a DS even if you aren't interested in touch screen controls.
![]() | Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Buy new: $99.43 / Used from: $16.99 The incremental changes to the Famicom Wars series are very minor and are convoluted missteps as often improvements, so it's hard to say when the series peaked. That said, unless you really want online play, Dual Strike is probably the best choice. In addition to a massive amount of traditional content, the Combat Mode uses the touch screen to make one of the best mini-games I've ever played.
![]() | Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
Buy used from: $39.99 This is simply an excellent RPG.
![]() | Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story
Buy new: $25.00 / Used from: $30.00 Alphadream's third Mario & Luigi RPG is the best yet, with a quirky story and some of the best animation on the DS!
![]() | The World Ends With You
Buy new: $19.06 / Used from: $16.62 A fresh new RPG from Jupiter.
![]() | Kirby Canvas Curse
Buy new: $99.18 / Used from: $23.01 A compelling mix of old and new, with a good amount of unlockable content.
![]() | Nintendogs Labrador Retriever & Friends
Buy new: $27.82 / Used from: $18.99 Virtual pets have a limited audience, but everyone must acknowledge the Nintendogs games for creating a unique experience using all of the features on the DS. There are different versions of Nintendogs with different starter dogs, but all of the dogs are in all of the games; don't buy more than one.
![]() | Super Mario 64 DS
Buy new: $27.82 / Used from: $19.98 There is no ideal control scheme available for this portable port, and to accommodate that the difficulty has been reduced, but the greatness of the original still shines through. Plus, new content will keep old players on their toes.
![]() | Chrono Trigger
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $13.89 This is a fairly straight port of another one of the most popular games of all time. The added content is not as good as the original material, but apart from the new translation and lower resolution viewing area, the changes are optional. Kirby Super Star Ultra and Front Mission are two other good Super NES ports on the DS.
![]() | Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard
Buy new: $89.83 / Used from: $16.49 A hardcore RPG that requires you to manage your own map in the game. Yuzo Koshiro composed the music for PC88 and then tried to recreate it on the DS. Now that's a labor of love! And if this isn't hardcore enough for you, try The Dark Spire.
![]() | Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Buy new: $114.98 / Used from: $34.88 This became quite the cult hit and there are four Ace Attorney games on the DS as well as tons of other graphic adventure games like Hotel Dusk. Personally, I don't think the sparse interactivity makes up for the fact that the games aren't as interesting as a book or movie, but they're done well considering what they are. Try one out and see if it's for you.
![]() | Animal Crossing: Wild World
Buy new: $33.47 / Used from: $24.98 This game is very popular and is executed very well. I hate it. It's like somebody took the walking around towns, talking to people, and collecting items that are added to games to artificially make them longer, and then left out the actual game.
![]() | Pokemon Platinum
Buy new: $31.77 / Used from: $19.75 It's Pokemon. It's very popular. Your child might learn to read by playing it, but if she says she needs both Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, tell her you know she's lying and she needs to make more friends.
![]() | Jump Ultimate Stars Nintendo DS (Japanese version)
Buy used from: $44.99 This is a Smash Bros-style party fighting game featuring a ton of anime characters. It has gotten very positive reviews, so if it sounds like something you might like, you probably will.
![]() | Bleach: Dark Souls
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $18.00 A great 2D fighting game from Treasure, regardless of whether you are interested in the licensed characters.
![]() | Tetris DS
Buy used from: $45.00 A port of Tetris with NES-inspired graphics, a variety of play modes, and solid online competition. There are also competent DS ports of Puyo Puyo and Puzzle Bobble, although neither of those offer anything new.
![]() | Planet Puzzle League
Buy new: $62.94 / Used from: $21.94 Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack/Pokemon Puzzle League remade with smooth touch screen controls and online matches. Yoshi, Pokemon, and fairies were all taken out with the hopes of appealing to adults. Picross received a similar treatment on the DS, but the system's low resolution makes it hard to recommend over a pencil and paper.
![]() | Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!
Buy new: $18.82 / Used from: $11.45 Education and wellness games sure have taken off, and I really like the format of tracking daily progress over time. Unfortunately, none of the ones I've played have been especially effective or fun, unless you include Dance Dance Revolution, which came out long before this.
![]() | Mega Man ZX: Advent
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $14.91 The Mega Man ZX games put hardcore 2D action gameplay into continuous worlds that have towns and dialogue for some reason.
![]() | Sonic Rush Adventure
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $13.08 The Sonic Rush games aren't nearly as balanced as the original games on Sega Genesis due to a lot of blind jumps and bosses that float around in the background wasting a minute of your time before swooping down for an insta-kill attack, but Dimps has done a better job with Sonic than Artoon, Flagship, Tose, and Suzak did with Yoshi's Island DS, Kirby Squeak Squad, Super Princess Peach, and Wario.
![]() | Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword
Buy new: $15.74 / Used from: $9.48 A 3D action game controlled entirely with the stylus.
![]() | Final Fantasy IV
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $15.96 This remake's main selling points of new 3D graphics, music, voice acting, and a customizable summon monster actually make it inferior to previous renditions, but the subtler changes to the battle system and the script make it worth playing through one of the best games of all time once more.
![]() | Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $13.98 The act of playing video games can be boiled down to three things: Making decisions, using your reflexes, and passively wading through junk meant to waste your time so you won't sell the game too quickly. This boils out most of the latter two and leaves an addicting core of making decisions every second that can last hundreds of hours. If you want more after that, try Disgaea or Luminous Arc.
![]() | Metal Slug 7
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $14.97 Despite its low-resolution sprites, this game captures the feel of the other Metal Slug games. The combat school challenges add value.
![]() | Contra 4
Buy new: $19.82 / Used from: $9.90 This game was developed by Wayforward, an American company that had nothing to do with the other Contra games, but the game is very enjoyable if you consider it to be more of a tribute than a sequel. The challenge mode is quite fun.
![]() | Bangai O Spirits
Buy new: $15.59 / Used from: $5.03 Action so intense it practically becomes a puzzle game! It's up to you whether that sounds like fun.
![]() | Space Invaders Extreme
Buy new: $50.94 / Used from: $15.96 This is a really solid shooter, even if it imitates Tetsuya Mizuguchi's style to a near comical degree. Shooter fans should also check out Ketsui Death Label from Cave, and Space Invaders Extreme 2.
![]() | Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2
Buy new: $59.55 / Used from: $11.97 The Trauma Center games are fast-paced surgical simulations controlled with the touch screen. The action is much more fluid than in the disappointing Cooking Mama games. The games feel too much like work for me, but the games are a well-crafted experience that couldn't be done without a touch screen.
![]() | Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Buy new: $24.82 / Used from: $17.78 This is a simple graphic adventure game where all of the characters challenge you with brain teasers that could be enjoyed in a book as much as on a DS. For some reason, everything clicks together and the whole is greater than its parts. The second game just came out in North America in August, and a fourth game will be released in Japan soon.
![]() | Lunar Knights: Vampire Hunters
Buy new: $60.44 / Used from: $18.92 This dungeon-crawling action RPG from Kojima Studios may not get as much attention as Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Izuna, Children of Mana, or Shiren the Wanderer, but it got better review scores than all of them, so pay attention!
![]() | Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.94 This game is really simple: You collect stuff so you can launch it out of a cannon. Every game needs a fun core; if that isn't one I don't know what is.
![]() | Chibi-Robo: Park Patrol
Buy new: $83.44 / Used from: $9.99 Most people prefer the second Chibi-Robo game on the DS over this, but that one has not been released outside of Japan.
![]() | Warioware: Touched!
Buy new: $112.67 / Used from: $19.00 This is a decent mini-game collection, but I prefer Warioware Twisted and Smooth Moves. The upcoming Warioware: DIY looks interesting.
![]() | Rhythm Heaven
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $12.98 I wanted to like this, but the touch screen controls made it less fun than it would have been if you used buttons like a normal game.
