Video game essentials: My Nintendo AND Playstation collection
By an Amazon.com customer
PlayStation 3 80 GB Metal Gear Solid 4 PackPlayStation 3 80 GB Metal Gear Solid 4 Pack
Buy used from: $349.99
Backwards compatible with PS2 & PS1 games. MGS4 is an excellent FPS/stealth game. My PS3 also serves as my movie player. Upconverts my collection of 130+ DVDs, and allows me to purchase movies on Blu-Ray from now on. Also, the PSN download service is great.
PLAYSTATION Network CardPLAYSTATION Network Card
Buy new: $50.00
I've downloaded quite a few games to my PS3s hard drive, including remakes of Street Fighter II Turbo, Bionic Commando, Prince of Persia, and 1942. And let's not forget the PSOne Classics selection, including Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil: Director's Cut, Syphon Filter, Twisted Metal, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, etc.
MotorStormMotorStorm
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $5.43
Very fun new racing franchise from Sony.
Grand Theft Auto IVGrand Theft Auto IV
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $19.47
I didn't like this one much when I first tried it, since it's style was a bit different than the PS2 trilogy. Now I love it.
Madden NFL 10Madden NFL 10
Buy new: $50.00 / Used from: $40.54
I'll be picking this up in August. Last year's PS3 version sucked because of the crappy Franchise mode (not to mention several other extremely annoying features and bugs). I actutally sold my PS3 version and UPGRADED to the PS2 version!!! This year, EA promises an improved Franchise Mode, so I'll give the PS3 version another shot. My fingers are crossed.
God of WarGod of War
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $4.49
Great modern-day hack-and-slash game.
God of War 2God of War 2
Buy used from: $7.50
Just as good, if not better, than the original. Can't wait for God of War III to come out on PS3 next year.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed KingDragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Buy new: $16.03 / Used from: $6.28
Outstanding RPG. Can't wait for Dragon Quest IX on DS. I'll be picking it up when it comes out (hopefully later this year).
Final Fantasy XIIFinal Fantasy XII
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $7.19
I'm partial to the old Super NES Final Fantasies, but this game IS fun. A huge, huge improvement over the previous few series installments (I thought FFX was garbage). Can't wait for FFXIII to come out on PS3 next spring.
Tomb Raider AnniversaryTomb Raider Anniversary
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $8.29
Great remake of the PS1 classic.
WiiWii
Buy new: $199.99 / Used from: $149.99
What a brilliant idea this was, Nintendo. No, I'm not talking about the new control scheme (although it is fun). I'm talking about the Virtual Console. Since Nintendo's cartridge-to-disc evolution prevents the sort of backwards compatibility seen on the PS3, they came up with this fantastic service that allows you to download games from the NES, Super NES, N64, etc.
Wii 2000 Points CardWii 2000 Points Card
Buy used from: $22.99
The WIIWARE service is great w/ several stellar "new" games like Dr. Mario Online RX and Tetris Party, but the real meat and potatoes here is the VIRTUAL CONSOLE. So far, I've downloaded 14 NES games, 12 SNES, 4 N64, and 3 each for the Genesis and TG16. Much more convenient than having a bunch of old cartridges with failing save batteries.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight PrincessThe Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Buy new: $46.99 / Used from: $30.98
After the Virtual Console, this was my main reason for buying a Wii. I wasn't disappointed... Another worthy entry in the Zelda series that shouldn't be missed.
Metroid Prime 3: CorruptionMetroid Prime 3: Corruption
Buy new: $69.98 / Used from: $12.49
Another great update to a classic Nintendo franchise. And you don't need to have played parts 1 or 2 to jump right into part 3.
Super Mario GalaxySuper Mario Galaxy
Buy new: $46.80 / Used from: $31.97
The gravity effects really are stunning. Playing this game makes me feel like a kid again. A strong dose of that old Nintendo magic...
Mario Kart Wii with Wii WheelMario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel
Buy new: $49.99 / Used from: $39.99
Great update to the Mario Kart series. This is no less fun than Mario Kart 64 was back in my college days. Although the Wii wheel is cool for about 10 minutes, the novelty wore off quickly for me, and I soon switched over to the Classic Controller.
Super Smash Bros. BrawlSuper Smash Bros. Brawl
Buy new: $44.99 / Used from: $31.99
See my description of Mario Kart Wii above.
Punch-Out!!Punch-Out!!
Buy new: $41.42 / Used from: $31.99
Essential to any Wii collection. The new controls are fun, but the classic controls are still where it's at.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 Wii Motion Plus BundleTiger Woods PGA Tour 10 Wii Motion Plus Bundle
Buy used from: $59.97
I tried last year's Wii version, and wasn't super-impressed, but this year's new-and-improved version with the new Wii Motion Plus peripheral is excellent.
Wii FitWii Fit
Buy new: $119.95 / Used from: $64.99
OK, I was a bit skeptical at first, but I decided to jump on the bandwagon. I'll hand it to Nintendo--after over 20 years, they still try to keep things fresh.
Nintendo DS Lite Cobalt / BlackNintendo DS Lite Cobalt / Black
Buy new: $129.99 / Used from: $117.95
How fun is this little machine?! At first, I was skeptical of the touch-screen controls, and the idea of playing a game displayed on two screens. That was pretty silly of me. This handheld console is Fun with a capital F. As a bonus, it's backwards compatible with Game Boy Advance cartridges.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom HourglassThe Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $14.48
The best portable Zelda game since Link's Awakening is a sequel to the Wind Waker, and reminds me a lot of Link to the Past. Sound like a winning combination??--it is. The sequel, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is due out by the end of this year, and is high on my wish list.
Chrono TriggerChrono Trigger
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $11.60
A desert island game. This is the definitive version of Chrono Trigger -- and I played it in '95 on the SNES.
Final Fantasy IVFinal Fantasy IV
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $13.71
Man, is Square making all of my video game dreams come true, or what! This is a 3D remake of the best Final Fantasy game ever made.
Final Fantasy I & II Dawn of SoulsFinal Fantasy I & II Dawn of Souls
Buy new: $49.98 / Used from: $11.08
The original Final Fantasy for the NES was one of my favorite games ever when I was younger. This is a very solid GBA remake that comes packaged with the (formerly Japan-only) Final Fantasy II.
Final Fantasy VIFinal Fantasy VI
Buy new: $109.89 / Used from: $26.99
Great handheld version of the Super NES classic. Still one of the best games ever made.
Castlevania: Order of EcclesiaCastlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Buy used from: $19.98
Great new addition to the series. Although I'm still a big fan of the original NES and SNES entries in this series, the newer 2D iterations (starting with Symphony of the Night on Playstation in 1997) that incorporate RPG elements are definitely a good time.
Metroid: Zero MissionMetroid: Zero Mission
Buy new: $89.99 / Used from: $13.50
A great portable 2D Metroid game, which the actual current-generation DS library is lacking. This is a remake of the original NES game.
New Super Mario Bros.New Super Mario Bros.
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $13.35
The first real 2D Mario game since Super Mario World helped launch the Super Nintendo in 1991. Not the best game in the series, but still very fun. The multiplayer Wii version will be out later this year, and I'll be purchasing it immediately.
Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3
Buy new: $104.98 / Used from: $10.20
Great handheld port of the Super NES classic. Don't be fooled by this game's childish appearance-- it's a ridiculously addictive and challenging old-school 2D platform game. As hard as some developers try, they don't really make 'em like this anymore.
Wario Land 4Wario Land 4
Buy new: $131.99 / Used from: $6.75
Another excellent 2D platformer.
Mario Kart DSMario Kart DS
Buy new: $29.96 / Used from: $18.70
Has the options of Mario Kart Wii w/ the graphics of Mario Kart 64, all in the palm of your (my) hand. Essential. Excellent wireless multiplayer mode.
F-Zero Gp LegendF-Zero Gp Legend
Buy new: $14.23 / Used from: $1.49
Fast and furious racing game in the 2D style of the SNES original. I'm about ready to give up on hoping for a new installment on the DS or Wii.
DoomDoom
Buy used from: $21.00
Surprisingly good handheld version of the game that popularized the First-Person-Shooter genre.
Tetris WorldsTetris Worlds
Buy used from: $20.00
Gotta have a portable version of Tetris. Tetris DS is out of print, pricey and extremely overrated (I used to own it). This older GBA version gets the job done for a lot less $$. Just press "L" and "select" on the options menu, and you get a bare-bones old-school version of Tetris reminiscent of the original Game Boy version. Perfect!
Dr. Mario and Puzzle LeagueDr. Mario and Puzzle League
Buy new: $89.93
Gotta have a portable Dr. Mario. As a bonus, you get Puzzle League (formerly known as Tetris Attack on SNES). Great value. The new DSi download service may have Dr. Mario now, but it'll take a lot more than that to get me to trade up from my DS Lite just yet.
Namco MuseumNamco Museum
Buy new: $18.10 / Used from: $11.99
Portable Ms. Pac Man and Galaga. 'Nuff said. Namco Museum DS didn't really improve much on this GBA game at all.
Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!
Buy new: $18.82 / Used from: $11.43
Very fun, innovative "casual" game that takes advantage of the DS voice-recognition and handwriting recognition capabilities. I liked this so much that I just ordered the sequel.
Crosswords DSCrosswords DS
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $13.22
Great utilization of the DS touch screen.
My Spanish CoachMy Spanish Coach
Buy new: $29.48 / Used from: $25.00
These educational games really do add value to the DS concept, since it's such a perfect platform for software like this.
