Okay look, we've all seen the movies, many of us have read the books, and plenty of us have already played the incredibly cool Lord of the Rings board game designed by Reiner Knizia. And while the determined pluck of the hobbits is obviously worthy of admiration, haven't you ever thought there was something kind of cool about Sauron? Sure you might not want to admit it, or maybe you do, but the guy is in at least a partially sympathetic spot. He just wants to rule all of creation and to do that, all he needs to do is pry some jewelry away from a hobbit. With this Sauron expansion set to the original board game, players can get their chance to play the bad guy himself, employ the Black Rider, and rule them all. But beware: with this set, the pesky hobbits have some new weapons of their own. The set includes 30 Sauron cards, nine Nazgul cards, and five Fellowship cards. It's not capable of being played on its own but makes a great counterpart, and counterpoint, to the original board game. --Charlie Williams

Who wants to be the bad guy?
Tired of playing the Hobbits and constantly dying in an attempt to save Middle Earth? Want to see how the other half lives? Then this expansion is for you as you play Sauron working to foil the ring bearers on their quest.

Now you control the Nazgul and each scenerio send them out to try to locate the ring bearer and report back to Sauron. If you can find the ring Bearer and report back before the scenerio ends, the ring is yours!

The die roll is replaced (almost always) by Sauron's turn who has his own cards and the control of the Nazgulwith their own effects on the party. You will use the Power or the Lord of Mordor to find the ring and take it.

The party however is not without it's own resources as a Gandalf card is added to the deck and 5 new ability cards are added.

The Best inovation however is the Bag of Sauron. Now the tiles are added to the bag and pulled out. This can be used independantly of the expansion, in additon two other variants are allowed which can be used with or without the Sauron expansion.

#1. Two new cards one which allows the ring bearer to pass the ring on once. The second which at a cost of 10 shields allows you to more the eye back 3 spaces (once and once only). This card allowed my group to beat the game for the first time.

#2. An additional set of tiles. If they are used then the party will have the option to reject a tile, however if they do then a 2nd is drawn and must be accepted.

The only thing missing from the game is a new set of scenerio's I was hopeing for maybe a scenerio between Rivendel and Moria and perhaps one between Isengard and Lothlorian but then again that would add to the length of the game even more.

Worth your money, remember you MUST have the base game (but not the friends and foes expansion) to use it.

excellent expansion pack!!
We purcaced the "Lord of the Rings game," last christmas for a friend, and we love it. It took almost 25 times for us to conquer it, and even then we didn't get all of our players through it. The greatest part of this game is that it is totally selfless. Everyone who plays is in it for one goal, much like the books, to destroy "The One Ring." When we added this and "The Friends and Foes expansion," the game became increasingly more difficult, but we were up to the challenge. This expansion broadens the game gives it more scope and, one of your friends gets to become "Sauron the Destoryer." The original only allows for 5 to play the game, but now 6 may play, and it's not just the turn of the cards that can overcome you, but now it is a thinking being that comes after you in all their desceptive human ways. Increbible expanision to the original, I would recommend it to any Tolkein fan.

Fixes the one hole in the original LotR game
If you already love LotR, you need to get this expansion. If you know of LotR, but were turned off by its solitaire aspect: this is the expansion that fixes that.

The one complaint with the otherwise innovative, beautiful, and challenging LotR game was that it was possible for a single player who knew the game well to ruin it by bossing the other players around regarding their plays. Not only could this happen, but it was a good strategy. The Sauron expansion fixes that.

Now, the more the hobbits plan openly, the better Sauron knows how to wreck their plans. It's up to each hobbit to judge what to share openly, and what to keep hidden from allies and enemy alike. In doing to, it makes the game more fun and challenging for all.

Note: Some players complain that this expansion makes the already difficult LotR challenging to the point of masochism.
