After five years as a prisoner of the Mescaleros, Maria escapes to Presidio, where she begs for work in a cantina owned by the local madam, Mama Sieta. There she meets lovable and unique characters such as Old Bac, Sheriff Tucker, and Pigtail, who is afraid of the spooky church, San Crist³bal. An Irish nun gives a few laughs and encouragement as she vies with Mama Sieta for the soul of the young girl. Wicked Juanita and curiosity are the greatest enemies to the love she has for Montana, her rugged outlaw with the gunfighter eyes, who is intent on stealing gold from another outlaw and uses some tomfoolery to reach his gold. Due to a misunderstanding, Maria is forced to play a dual role. What mystery binds her to the mission and convent of the roses, San Crist³bal, and the glowing cross? Will she ever know?

Customer Reviews
What a great story!
I just finished reading the Convent and the Rose and I had a hard time putting it down. The author paints the picture of the
landscape and the people with such realism that I thought I was there in that period. The dialogue is excellent and very well
written. I felt as if I was right there talking to them. I had no problem following the Chinese, Irish and Mexican dialogue. Excellent story line. The author leaves the reader with just enough to make him or her want to read more and find the answers.
Just when you think you have them, then there are more twists and turns that always keep you guessing. The story is very unpredictable until the end. It is a great read for both male and female audiences.

"Kathy Shultz proves to be an author to watch for with this western ghost story that has more than a little romance thrown in. She brings to life the brutal hardships of early America and the sacrifices people had to make in order to survive. This is a tragic love story where love is blinded by prejudice and blocked by assumptions made too quickly. I learned more about the character of humans and aim to be more understanding and less assuming from now on. I am sure readers of this book will scan the shelves looking for future work by Kathy Shultz."
