The King Must Die: A NovelThe King Must Die: A Novel by Mary Renault
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
This brilliant evocation of the pagan world and retelling of the foundational story of Theseus, shook me to the core as a young teen. This one never gets old.
The Once and Future KingThe Once and Future King by Terence Hanbury White
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Another classic work, now taught in schools, and another retelling of a story which never grows old, and hits the Jungian archetypal spot. Just look at the number of knock-offs, and the entire genre of "Arthurian" fiction which has grown since this was written!
I, Claudius : From the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius, Born 10 B.C., Murdered and Deified A.D. 54 (Vintage International)I, Claudius : From the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius, Born 10 B.C., Murdered and Deified A.D. 54 (Vintage International) by Robert Graves
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.92
Graves is a whole planet unto himself. Read this as a teen, with horror and fascination. Search out his other, less well-known fiction for a view into his religious convictions. Even his much dissed "White Goddess," is worth a look by anyone wanting to understand the rebirth of modern paganism.
The Stranger PrinceThe Stranger Prince by Margaret Irwin
Buy used from: $1.99
Prince Rupert! Grandma still loves this one, and so did her 17 year old grand, who, as I did at the same age, devoured it and declared it "so sad and soooo romantic!" This older generation of hist. fic. writers didn't always do their research, but this isn't the case with Irwin. If you want to turn literate teens on to history, go with Irwin, who can write, too.
The Fencing MasterThe Fencing Master by Arturo Perez-Reverte
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.25
A wonderfully evoked story of decayed Spanish glory, and the last hurrah of an aging artist. Perez-Reverte's "Seville Communion," "Captain Alatriste" series, and "Club Dumas" are likewise terrific. He's the first genuinely exciting writer in this field in a long time.
Burr: A NovelBurr: A Novel by Gore Vidal
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $2.43
Despite the fact that the charming, duplicitous Burr is the hero, I must have re-read this, laughing, a zillion times. The devastating portraits of more revered founding fathers is worth the price of admission, even if I am a huge fan of Alexander Hamilton.
The Name of the Rose: including the Author's PostscriptThe Name of the Rose: including the Author's Postscript by Umberto Eco
Buy new: $11.48 / Used from: $0.01
A miraculous and horrific short course on the Middle Ages, one you'll never forget. The motion picture with Shaun Connery was OK, but the book is GREAT, and absolutely worth the work.
High Spirits: A Tale of Ghostly Rapping and RomanceHigh Spirits: A Tale of Ghostly Rapping and Romance by Dianne K Salerni
Buy new: $20.95 / Used from: $8.30
The Fox Sisters tell all! This jewel is from one of the myriad talents who couldn't convince NYC. Plenty of solid research here, and a wonderfully engaging style.
Mozart's WifeMozart's Wife by Juliet Waldron
Buy new: $15.95 / Used from: $12.99
I spent many, many years with Mozart and his "Best Beloved Little Wife." Once you start to read, you won't be able to stop. I promise: you'll be the proverbial fly on the wall in this storied household.
The Street of a Thousand BlossomsThe Street of a Thousand Blossoms by Gail Tsukiyama
Buy new: $16.30 / Used from: $0.64
Again, pretty much everything she has written is excellent. Delicious jewel-like sushi on the page, each piece organized with supreme care and art. I'm not the supermarket kind, either!!
Turpentine: A NovelTurpentine: A Novel by Spring Warren
Buy new: $11.90 / Used from: $0.01
I'm not much of a lover of westerns, but this one absolutely grabbed me, perhaps because it's better defined as a picaresque novel. The trials and tribulations of the hapless hero and totally insane (and no doubt utterly true-to-life) cast of period characters kept me turning pages.
The Other Boleyn GirlThe Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
Buy used from: $7.56
Henry VIII--yawn----but this IS an entertaining read, with an interesting new take on a familiar cast of characters.
Killing Che: A NovelKilling Che: A Novel by Chuck Pfarrer
Buy used from: $0.70
A clear evocation of a well-remembered (at least by me) time. The terrifying and endlessly lethal struggle among idealists for the soul of the world, prosecuted by men and governments who have none. Unputdownable!
