The primary text book for my course. Very comprehensive, covering thousands of years Jewish history, practice and holidays, as well as modern issues. I couldn't put it down.
Gates of Shabbat: Shaarei Shabbat: A Guide for Observing ShabbatGates of Shabbat: Shaarei Shabbat: A Guide for Observing Shabbat by Mark Dov Shapiro
Buy used from: $7.95
A Shabbat newbie's guide to observance. A Reform approach. Very easy to follow, transliterated Hebrew for easy pronunciation. I used this guide to plan my first Shabbat and I still use it to recite Kiddush.
Etz Hayim: Torah and Commentary; Travel-sizeEtz Hayim: Torah and Commentary; Travel-size
Buy new: $19.80 / Used from: $17.45
Great "pocket size" translation with English and Hebrew. I found it's great to have multiple copies of Torah with commentary; the different takes on the same passages are fascinating and speak to the heart of Jewish interprative tradition. The Torah is arguably the most important book in Judaism.
Essential Torah: A Complete Guide to the Five Books of MosesEssential Torah: A Complete Guide to the Five Books of Moses by George Robinson
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $3.46
A helpful commentary to read along with your copy of the Torah (see Etz Hayim below) or simply by itself. I actually read this book cover to cover before I even cracked the Torah itself.
Hebrew-English Tanakh Student EditionHebrew-English Tanakh Student Edition
Buy new: $29.70 / Used from: $21.95
Tanakh is composed of the Pentateuch (the Torah--5 books Moses), the Nevi'im (Prophets), and the Kethuvim (Writings). It contains side-by-side Hebrew with modern English translation. Get yourself a copy of the Tanakh!
Studies in Bereshit (Genesis : in the Context of Ancient and Modern Jewish Bible Commentary)Studies in Bereshit (Genesis : in the Context of Ancient and Modern Jewish Bible Commentary) by Nehama Leibowitz
Buy used from: $49.95
This book is recommended as a study aid in "Essential Torah" by George Robinson. It's a hefty work of commentary soley concentrated on Genesis (which oddly enough, Amazon won't let me type the Hebrew name because it thinks the name contains a bad word!). The author has published a "Studies in..." commentary collection book for each of the 5 books in the Pentateuch.
Paths of Faith: The New Jewish Prayer Book for Synagogue and Home : For Weekdays, Shabbat, Festivals & Other OccasionsPaths of Faith: The New Jewish Prayer Book for Synagogue and Home : For Weekdays, Shabbat, Festivals & Other Occasions by Chaim Stern
Buy new: $24.95 / Used from: $14.93
The prayer book/siddur. Reform. You'll need a siddur when you start attending Synagogue. However, I found that this particular edition is not always used--it's a "gender neutral" and very modern. Many congregations use an older version, all in Hebrew.
Liberal JudaismLiberal Judaism by Eugene B Borowitz

A great summary of the Jewish Liberal (Reform) tradition. If you're converting Reform--as I'm doing--this is a must-read.

To Life: A Celebration of Jewish Being and ThinkingTo Life: A Celebration of Jewish Being and Thinking by Harold S. Kushner
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $0.01
Recommended by a Rabbi in an early conversion interview. The author, Harold S Kushner (a rabbi and author of the bestseller "When Bad Things Happen to Good People") offers concise and enthusiastic exploration of what it means to be Jewish: holidays, rituals, anti-semetism in the world, Israel, worship and more.

Classic Bible Stories for Jewish ChildrenClassic Bible Stories for Jewish Children by Alfred J. Kolatch
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $2.99
My son (7 years old) listened with rapt attention to the stories. The art work feels a bit dated, but that's my only criticism. Many of the stories were new to me, as well, coming from a fairly non-religious background. All in all, it is a book that we enjoyed together; it also led to some broader discussions regarding the deeper themes of the Torah and Judaism.
