![]() | Drowning Ruth: A Novel (Oprah's Book Club) by Christina Schwarz
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01 This one kick started our bookclub. Was received by most as an 'OK' read. Even though the book wasn't stellar, it did serve as an example as to the type of books that are appropriate for discussion. This one was our guinea pig read.

![]() | The Brass Verdict: A Novel by Michael Connelly
Buy used from: $9.79 Ex addict lawyer cracks case. Book was good but had some faults and not necessarily discussable in a book club setting. We are learning to define what we would read for pleasure, and what type of book should be chosen for discussion.
|
![]() | The Great Pretender by Millenia Black
Buy used from: $3.57 This juicy little number, as disturbing as the subject matter was, made for some good firey discussion. Most members hated the main male character for maintaining a double life, mostly so he could get his rocks off and not caring who he destroyed in the process.
|
![]() | Beachcomber by Karen Robards
Buy used from: $0.01 Nancy Drew mystery with a Scooby Do ending. The group was divided on this one. Only goes to prove that the old adage, "different strokes for different folks" rings true. Lukewarm who dunnit in a local beach setting. Strange ending.

|
![]() | Lowboy: A Novel by John Wray
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $13.16 Another strange read, however a few members liked it. Offbeat tale about a schizophrenic subway virgin. The most expensive book on our list, for sure. We're sticking to books that are a few years old from now on.
|
![]() | The Falls: A Novel (P.S.) by Joyce Carol Oates
Buy new: $13.22 / Used from: $0.62 This was a big book and some members didn't finish it, which limited discussion. For those of us who did, the consensus was favorable with points to ponder. Kookie woman raises kids near Niagra Falls - her nemesis.
|
![]() | Ask Again Later: A Novel by Jill A. Davis
Buy new: $11.92 / Used from: $0.01 Well received book about how one woman changes her life for the sake of her ill Mother. Expected it to be funnier than it was, but good book just the same and one that most of us wouldn't have otherwise read.
|
![]() | Water for Elephants: A Novel by Sara Gruen
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $1.91 By far the best book we've read to date. Much discussion and different interpretations. Old man reminisces about the circus life he once lived. This one is what book clubs are all about.
|
![]() | Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: A Novel by Lisa See
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $6.68 This book averaged 4 out of 5 stars among our readers. More than just a history lesson, this book had us rethinking our own relationships and hopefully will make each of us a better friend to the important people in our lives. The grisly scenes regarding the footbinding made us all thankful that we are "big footed women!"
|
![]() | Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.65 Suspenseful read about a man trapped on an island mental hospital. The creepy setting contributed to labeling this as a real page turner. Is he a patient, or is he a US Marshall who has lost his mind? Only the ending generated discussion, however most agreed it was a good book.
