Books I Read in 2008
By an Amazon.com customer
The Corrections: A NovelThe Corrections: A Novel by Jonathan Franzen
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.01
I pretty much hated every character in this book and only finished it to see if their lives turned out to be as miserable as them. (January)
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & ClayThe Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $1.99
Originally started a few years back, I put it down as soon as the Golem showed up. BF promised it was worth getting past the Golem part and he was right. I loved this book. (January)
The Emperor's Children (Vintage)The Emperor's Children (Vintage) by Claire Messud
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
I'm unclear about what garnered this book such positive reviews. Another book in which I did not like any of the characters, but less dislikeable than those in "The Corrections." Made me realize that I am not one of those people who would reinvent myself if I had the chance. That's good. (February)
Zoot Suit and Other PlaysZoot Suit and Other Plays by Luis Valdez
Buy new: $9.89 / Used from: $2.75
Read this in one work-out at the gym. Plays are fun! (February)
A Dirty Job: A NovelA Dirty Job: A Novel by Christopher Moore
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $3.39
Some parts of this book aren't perfectly or satisfyingly resolved, but it's a fun and easy read. Plus, the cover is glow-in-the-dark and you can't ever beat that in a book! (February)
The Invention of Hugo CabretThe Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
Buy new: $14.61 / Used from: $11.94
A completely original take on storytelling through books. I loved it and wish everything could make me feel like a child finding adventure through a book. "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" does that. (March)
The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the WorldThe Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World by A. J. Jacobs
Buy new: $5.35 / Used from: $3.49
Now, I've read the entire encyclopaedia via A.J. Jacobs! I learned a lot of trivial knowledge reading this book. (April)
Then We Came to the End: A NovelThen We Came to the End: A Novel by Joshua Ferris
Buy new: $10.07 / Used from: $0.48
A lot seems to happens in the book, but when you think about it again at the end, it really doesn't. Ferris definitely captures the office environment very well and reminds me why I never want to return to it. (April)
Acceptance: A NovelAcceptance: A Novel by Susan Coll
Buy new: $16.15 / Used from: $0.02
Was I this bad in high school? Fun novel to read and remember the thrill game of college applications. (April)
Relentless Pursuit: A Year in the Trenches with Teach for AmericaRelentless Pursuit: A Year in the Trenches with Teach for America by Donna Foote
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $3.00
It was like reading about two very different parts of my life: working in the TFA organization for two years and teaching my first-year at Locke High School. (May)
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar WaoThe Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz
Buy new: $15.72 / Used from: $5.00
I loved many parts of this book and thought much of the writing brilliant! I wish I knew more about LOTR ... (June)
Unaccustomed EarthUnaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $3.19
Lahiri is one of my favorite authors and I think she is best at short stories. My favorites ... all of them?! (June)
The Boat (Rough-Cut)The Boat (Rough-Cut) by Nam Le
Buy new: $15.61 / Used from: $2.22
I'm mixed. I loved the "Love and Honor and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice" (amazing title, right?), "Cartagena," and "Hiroshima," but the rest were difficult. Maybe I'm stuck in summer reading mode? (July)
Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1)Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $5.50 / Used from: $2.69
Mmm, I read this so I could relate to my students since they're all reading it. Umm, yea, right. It's totally mindless and fun. (July)
New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2)New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $11.69 / Used from: $5.03
More "field study" for the classroom. The writing is still terrible - the same thing is said at least nineteen times throughout the book: "Jacob is my best friend, but I don't love him" - but the story makes up for it! (July)
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Harper Fiction)Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Harper Fiction) by Gregory Maguire
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.55
I watched the musical last month so I thought I should read the book. What I really should do is watch the movie. Still a little confused ... (July)
The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup and a Spool of ThreadThe Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup and a Spool of Thread by Kate DiCamillo
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.49
I think I've grown out of fairy tales. (August)
Confessions of an Ugly StepsisterConfessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire
Buy new: $18.68 / Used from: $6.92
I don't know ... the end kind of reminds me of a McEwan twist. Interesting spin on the Cinderella story that nicely incorporates almost every detail of the fairy tale. (September)
Run: A NovelRun: A Novel by Ann Patchett
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.66
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. It's lovely to find a character with whom you so strongly identify - even if she is an eleven-year-old orphan, Kenya. It's a talent to write a novel like it's a short story. (September)
Fault LinesFault Lines by Nancy Huston
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $2.05
I found this novel really disturbing and unrealistic. Six-year-olds don't think the way Huston portrays. The big, shocking secret is fairly obvious before the midpoint and doesn't tie together the four narratives in any satisfying conclusion. (September)
The Stone Diaries: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)The Stone Diaries: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) by Carol Shields
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $2.95
The first three-quarters of this novel is wonderful. I kept folding the corners of pages where I read the words, "Memory could be poked with a stick, savored in the mouth like a popsicle, you could never get enough." (November)
Eclipse (The Twilight Saga, Book 3)Eclipse (The Twilight Saga, Book 3) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $11.47 / Used from: $4.21
I tried staying away from this series for a good five months, but nothing else is as satisfying or easy to read while stepping away on the elliptical machine at the gym. (December)
