Be Realistic About The Results
I had major shoulder surgery earlier this year with a hematoid under the scar that left a thicker scar than would be usual. I applied the gel up to three times daily (it is just inconvenient for me to apply all day long). I was ready to be realistic. The redness around the suture gradually evened out until there were no more irritation marks from putting tough bandages on and off daily. The gel forms almost a seal over the scar and it will flake off during the day - that's why applying the gel often is important. My surgeon thought the scar healed over nicely in four months, but there is still a thin scar. There is also some sun-block in this product as a scar gets exposed to the sun, it will turn white. I also tried Bio-Oil, 2-Ounce Bottle for some minor scratches last year and it helped but was slightly greasy. This is not inexpensive gel, but if you look at what you hope to achieve it's worth it. Also, Target has a scar gel with the exact same ingredients as Mederma, so it might be worth checking out.
A Total Godsend
I had 8 stitches on my face, 5 in one place and 3 in another location. The place where I had 5 stitches, I applied this religiously, several times every day. The place where i had 3 stitches, I applied it just about every day. About 3 months after I had the stitches removed and used Mederma, I had a chemical peel done, which is also a good way to diminish scars! Interestingly, the place where I had the most stitches but applied Mederma more frequently, it was fine. The other area, no damage done, but it actually stung a bit more there than anywhere else on the face. 2 wounds obtained at the same time, healed at different rates. I don't think that's a sugar pill effect.
The SPF can irritate some people's skin(it irritated mine a little), but for the first year, exposure to sun can cause permanent discoloration on a scar. IMO, It's best to tolerate a temporary little(very minor!)annoyance and heal well rather than not be irritated and have permanent damage.
When it comes to scars, the main goal is to stimulate the cell turnover rate. The most effective ways are chemical peels or laser resurfacing, especially for atrophic scars. TCA and glycolic peels are helpful, and most likely, you will need more than one treatment (depending on the strength of the peel). Regarding collagen and scarring: it will only plump up the skin temporarily- collagen is molecularly far too large to penetrate into the dermis. If you want to get rid of some scars, be them on the face or wherever, check out Glycolic Acid 35% Gel Peel, 30ml (Professional) &TCA 20% Chemical Peel solution, 30mL (Professional). But also read up on them before you do them or have them done. Know what you're doing and what to expect.
Glycol 35% is a good starting point
INCREDBLY Satisfied
I started using this product only three days ago. I have some deep red facial scars from formerly having acne as well as minor surgery. I have been using this only once a day for the past three nights and i can already tell a significant difference in the redness of my scars. And that's just using it once a day! (they recommend 2-3 times a day). I am incredibly happy, and although the product is somewhat expensive, in my opinion it is worth its weight in gold.
