The best monopod - Gitzo GM5541 monopod
I have a Gitzo tripod and had been looking for a monopod mainly to do early morning photography where I would be moving around a lot. Specifically for several hot air balloon fiestas. I wasn't sure how I would like the twist locks on the monopod but they are great. In retrospect I would have been very unhappy with the flip type locks on my Bogen tripod.
This is a VERY sturdy monopod. I don't have a dedicated head for it yet and am currently using my Arca-Swiss ball head which, although a bit on the heavy side, works very nicely. If you are thinking of using this with a Wimberly and 500, 600 or 800mm lens, it's more than sturdy enough but that's not what I'm going to use it for. I prefer a tripod with that much weight and money but I might give it a few trys.
If you buy this monopod you will never need to think about buying another, this is something you will have the rest of your life.
Gitzo Carbon Fiber Monopod
Excellent product, enjoyed using it at the 2009 Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii. It works well with the Canon 600mm lens. Rated at 55 lbs. I recieved alot of looks and comments as I follwed the pro golfers around the course. Extended out it was easy to carry and balance the camera & lens on my shoulder. I was asked if I was a professional and I replied a professional amateur!
Likes and feels like high quality stuff
The image gave me an illusion that it is a thin stick. It turned out to be a fat one.
