Christian Thought Revisited: Three Types of TheologyChristian Thought Revisited: Three Types of Theology by Justo L. Gonzalez
Buy new: $17.94 / Used from: $8.75
This book really opened up my eyes to the broadness of 'orthodox' Christianity in the first few centuries. Even though they regarded each other as true to the Christian faith, they disagreed on many things, such as the Original Sin and Inherited Guilt, the Bible, and Salvation.
Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the ChurchSurprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church by N. T. Wright
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $14.23
This eye-opener, written by a well-known Evangelical scholar, goes deep into the context of what the Early Church believed about the Resurrection, Heaven and Hell. Jesus warnings about Hell was not about a place people went after they died, but was rather about the impending destruction of the Temple that subsequently came true in 70AD.
The Orthodox Church: New EditionThe Orthodox Church: New Edition by Timothy Ware
Buy new: $11.05 / Used from: $5.94
The Family of Christianity is HUGE! One could say that there are five main families of Christianity. These are, in order of size, (1) Roman Catholic, (2) Protestant (and most of the 39,000 denominations in the world), (3) Eastern Orthodox, (4) Oriental Orthodox and (5) Assyrian Church of the East.
Kissing Christians: Ritual and Community in the Late Ancient Church (Divinations: Rereading Late Ancient Religion)Kissing Christians: Ritual and Community in the Late Ancient Church (Divinations: Rereading Late Ancient Religion) by Michael Philip Penn
Buy new: $30.41 / Used from: $37.50
The 'Holy Kiss' is more understood in Europe and the Middle East, where people kiss each other in greeting. However, what may shock you is that the Holy Kiss was a physical kiss on the lips across the genders. The writings of Church fathers give very good descriptions on how it was done.
2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity by Eddie L. Hyatt
Buy new: $9.79 / Used from: $7.49
This is a brilliant book that records different miracles that have been seen in the various streams of the Church ever since the New Testament. Personally, I have seen miracles and experienced the supernatural, so it did not come as much of a surprise, but it is still a good record of the reality of God's power in the world over the last 2000 years.
The Post-Evangelical (EMERGENTYS)The Post-Evangelical (EMERGENTYS) by Dave Tomlinson
Buy used from: $1.74
This comes as a great encouragement to those who have studied the many streams of Christianity, but have come from an evangelical background. It opens the doors to questioning the Evangelical tradition, without claiming to be truth itself.
The Coming of God: Christian EschatologyThe Coming of God: Christian Eschatology by Jurgen Moltmann
Buy new: $20.52 / Used from: $23.67
The Coming of God is about the future return of Jesus Christ and how He will restore the Universe including all those who are wicked. Judgment concerns Justice and not the condemnation of innocent people. It would be good to compare this with NT Wright's Surprised by Hope.
