Exceeds Expectations
My daughter is 5 years old and I am an avid computer gamer father. I have purchased far more than 50 games for her, and many of them were not worth the money I paid. So I have low expectations for children's games.
I would set the age for this game at 4+. If you have a 4-6 year old that hasn't played video games before, they will need about 15 minutes of "training" before you can let them play alone without frustration. If your child has played PC games before, they should only need about 5 minutes of help to get started.
This game is head and shoulders above the typical child video game. If your daughter is a Disney princess fan, she is going to LOVE this game. When my daughter first started playing this game, I couldn't drag her away (even with the promise of unhealthy snacks!) for almost 3 hours. The player will become what I call a "deputy princess" (she will be able to design the dress, crown, earrings, etc of her in game princess avatar). Each of the Disney princesses live in their own world. And they have been overrun with mischievous creatures (which are really just butterflies being forced to be bad). You will have several special powers with your magic wand that can free the butterflies. The special effects of these powers are beautiful and made my daughter gasp and smile proudly each time she used them. Be prepared for a near constant verbal barrage of "Daddy watch this!" during game play. The player will interact and assist each of the most popular Disney princesses (Ariel, Jasmine, Snow White, Bell, and Cinderella). My daughter even swam with Ariel, which I think was her favorite part. Each princess has 3 "chapters" which each have a few "missions" to complete. I estimate that each princess will take about 45 minutes of continuous play to complete.
Enchanted Journey has better graphics than any other child video game I have seen. Because of the high graphics, you are likely going to need a decent video card to play. My daughter's PC has an ATI 2600XT (~$28 at time of this review) and it is very smooth, so I dont expect that this game needs an expensive video card. The art is top notch, classic disney style and looks great! The voices are good too (except Sebastian, why is it so hard to find a good sebastian voice?).
This game does not have a lot of educational value because its designed for fun. But it does teach some great hand eye coordination and goal skills ("free 3 butterflies and return to me" goals).
For $20 this game is well worth it.
Technical note: This game does not work with the ATI catalyst 8.8 drivers (the latest as of this review), but it works fine with 8.7 and I bet 8.9+ (when they come out). If you don't know what catalyst drivers are, you probably don't have version 8.8, so don't worry about it. :)
Worth every penny! When does the sequel come out?!!
My daughter is 4 years old and mom usually works next to her while she plays her games. I love the "I Spy" series and "Bookworm Adventures" but I had no idea how much fun we could have together, until we introduced the "Enchanted Journey" game. This game is head and shoulders above the typical child video game. If your daughter is a Disney princess fan, she is going to LOVE this game. (she will be able to design the dress, crown, earrings, etc of her in game princess avatar).
The imagery is beautiful and her avatar frees the 'bad' guys (trapped rainbow butterflies) instead of the typical... 'decimate your opponent' games. The messages to my little one are so good that I feel confident walking away for a few minutes.
Enchanted Journey has better graphics than any other child video game I have seen.
We love it and hope that Disney makes more SOON.
The only downside... my daughter wants to be a "bog" for Halloween - I can't sew! I better start learning, huh? : )
Challenging for first "real" computer game
My 5 year old daugther has played PBS and Nick jr games a lot. When she was 4 we got her this game. I agree with the other reviewers that it is a great special effects game and was suitably wowed by the set up. I feel the need to add that the biggest downside is that there is not a lot of guidance as to what to do. "Go to the Grove" is all that she hears from Snow White and she has to run around to different parts of the game to try and figure out where the grove is and then how to open the gate. There were some missions that even my husband (a good video game person) had trouble figuring out and there is not any help button to explain or hint what to do. A lot of it is figuring out that different buttons do different things and learning about your surroundings (how to open the gate, make the vines disappear, where things aer located). My daughter likes the game and plays it alot but I often have to help her though things that she tries for a good 15 minutes and can't figure out. So heads up if this is your first real video game that there is not a lot of instruction (like a Dora game has) and requires an older preschooler to figure out.
