Good starter guitar
Nice package for the beginning guitarist. Everything you need to start playing right out of the box. Guitar is well made and has a nice sound. Only problem was I had to change the strings, as they were tarnished and would not hold their tune. Good value for the money
Great for the money.
Well, I didn't know what to expect when I bought a 'Surf Guitar'. I am 27 (and past the quick learning curve point in my life I guess) and still a beginner. I have a nice Ovation Acoustic but always wanted an Electric (for the different sound and relative playing ease). I knew I would spend too much and eventually buy a nice Epiphone until I came across this deal. It was too good to pass up.
The guitar itself looks very nice (blows the picture away). The fit and finish are spot-on while the hardware is understandably low end but not lacking. My friend (who is an excellent guitarist) made fun of the looks right away and said the guitar didn't feel as nice as his Epiphone Les Paul or my roommate's Gibson SG (of course they are both $600+ guitars). I like the unique look personally, but to each his own. The countours are certainly very nice and the paint job is top-notch (has a bit of a metallic fleck to it). The maple neck and rosewood fingerboard are equally impressive.
As other have mentioned, the 5B and 6E strings are rusted/tarnished and probably need to be replaced out of the box (thought I was able to smooth mine enough that they work fine). A new set of strings is included so I find this completely forgivable.
The accessories are nice because of the price, but I wouldn't buy any of the on their own. The amp is a practice amp and nothing more... but when you are a beginner you may not want to hear how bad you are at a higher volume then necessary... I know I don't. My brother and friends could all make the guitar and amp sound just wonderful (because they are above average to excellent musicians). The setup of my guitar is not perfect but because it is electric is hardly noticable compared to a hollow body. This is surely fixable by your local guitar shop/expert but not really necessary.
All in all I would say it is an excellent buy and would be a good fit for any eclectic adult starting out (like me) and perfect for an adolescent ready to find his hidden rock star. 4*s to Yamaha. 5*s if you are looking only at functionality and value for a beginner.
(Note, I paid $100 at time of purchase. Current price may be different.)

Simply love it !
Good Starter Guitar, I played it straight out of the box.
It came pre-strung with a grimy strings and I had to change the #5-B & the #6-E strings the same day.
However the package had the following much to my surprise.
1. New set of strings,
2. A digital tuner(with microphone-in socket)
3. A guitar stand
4. Set of Picks
5. DVD with chord dictionary software and instructions
6. Yamaha Guitar Method Hal-Leonard book 1.
And of course, the Yamaha XA-10 amplifier.
I just love the rosewood fingerboard looks lot expensive !!
Perfect gift to anyone starting off on guitar, this could well be the first
and only one for couple of years.
