Main Sydney Map 1:10,000

Sydney is Australia’s premier city. There’s an attitude of let’s have fun that permeates everything in this city. If there’s a celebration to be had, Sydney does it up big. This is one of the best cities in the world in which to celebrate New Year’s Eve and the festivel mood continues on throughout the year.

The largest city in Australia but not the capital (Can you name the capital? Answer below), Sydney has double the space of New York and half of the population. What you’ll find is a city built around the water preserving much of its open space. The Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge are the impressive landmarks that symbolize the city. Projecting out into Port Jackson, the Opera House is probably best viewed from the top of the Harbour Bridge, but that excursion may not be for the faint of heart. Climbing to the summit takes about 3 ½ hours, start to finish, and reaches a peak of 134 meters (439.63 feet). Some say it’s the best way to conquer a fear of heights - you decide.

The Rocks, the old town historic section of Sydney, is located across from the Opera House. First settled in 1788, the European Colonists' homes and businesses have been restored and now house trendy restaurants, boutiques and galleries. The Rocks Market, held every weekend at the north end of George Street and Playfair, is a wild streetmarket featuring everything imaginable.

Next to The Rocks is Circular Quay, the center for water traffic in the harbour. Ferries, cruises and jet boat rides leave from here and you can pick and choose among the destinations. One spot to consider is Fort Denison, located in the center of Sydney Harbour. Originally a prison, then turned into a fort after two American warships circled the island in the middle of the night, you can now visit the museum or watch the harbour traffic while enjoying lunch in the café.

The Royal Botanic Gardens, covering 30 hectares, is an oasis in the center of the city. Two aspects of the garden are of particular interest: Cadi Jam Ora, the First Encounters Garden and Mrs. Macquaries chair. Cadi Jam Ora is a garden devoted to the Cadigal people, the Aboriginal inhabitants of central Sydney. The garden, filled with plants native to the area during their time, tells the story of the Cadigal people and their first encounters with the Europeans during the settlement/invasion. Mrs. Macquarie was the wife of Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of New South Wales in the early 1800’s. The Macquaries lived in Government House, located within the Gardens and open to the public for tours, and Mrs. Macquarie used to walk out to a rocky point overlooking the Harbour and watch the ships come in. A chair carved out of the solid stone is where she used to sit and nowadays it’s the best location to take pictures with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as your backdrop.

About the Author
STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We’ve set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you’ve never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully.

The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970’s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.

After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.

He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.

More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.

Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.

Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.

Yet each title is still painstakingly researched and updated. STREETWISE® is one of the only, if not THE only map company that conducts research by walking or driving an area to ensure accuracy. After all, what good is the map if what you hold in your hands doesn’t match what you see on the street sign? This lengthy fact checking results in superior accuracy; in effect, we’ve done the work, now you have the adventure.

In the end, it’s not about the map, it’s about getting out and finding your own authentic experience wherever you go. It’s about being in a city or a region and discovering things that you never thought you would find. You can do this if you have confidence and you have confidence if you have a great map. STREETWISE® is the great map that you need.

Customer Reviews

It's not a map, it;s a travel agent5
Streetwise Sydney is essential to experiencing a city rich in history. It is laminated, so it's easy to fold, and it fits almost anywhere - a breast pocket perhaps. The map color codes different points of interest and of necessity- i.e. the Royal Botanic Gardens, Restaurants and Hotels. This map made a trip to a foreign city not so intimidating, and I wouldn't want to use any other kind when I plan my next adventure.

Indispensable for tourists5
I love these maps, they never disappoint. The Sydney one covers all the parts of the city that most tourists are likely to visit, with sufficient detail to keep you from getting lost, even on the smallest streets.

There is no better map on the market today.
