(for "Sunrise" in this collection) 1927 - 1928 (awards covered two years) - Did Win, sorta... - At the first ever Oscars, the Academy set the stage for many years to follow by ignoring the best film and instead giving the award to the popular film. Nevertheless, they at least gave "Sunrise" a special Oscar for "Unique Artistic Achievement". Not bad, and though it being on this list is borderline.

1928 - 1929 (awards covered two years) - Did Win/Shoulda Won! - Frankly, its a snooze-fest. Sure, there's some nice, light comedy and a bit of dancing (plus at least one gay character), but still. Meh. The only reason it gets a "Shoulda Won!" is cause it remains the only film I've seen from 1928 or 1929.

1929 - 1930 (awards covered two years) - Did Win/Shoulda Won! - Without a doubt one of the all-time great movies, and a wonderful one to watch in memory of the final vets of World War One (as I write this, there are only 18 left, and the last German one died a few days ago). Great acting, directing and writing make this a film that won and deserved to.

1935 - Did Win! - Certainly a worthwhile film, despite the appallingly bad history. While a great movie, with wonderful acting and beautifully filmed, it doesn't quite reach the level of the movie that should have won.

1935 - Shoulda Won! - Not that there was any way this movie was going to win, but it really deserved to. Far superior to the original and a very modern-feeling movie. Not scary anymore, but an artistic triumph.

1939 - Did Win/Shoulda Won! - Not a bad movie at all, though a bit long and showing some age. Still, Scarlett is one amazing character, and the film is just gorgeous! "Wizard of Oz" is just about as good, but not quite close. Sorry, Dorothy.
