On August 6, 1926 Don Juan & 8 Vitaphone shorts premiered. The Don Juan score & sound effects of clashing swords & chiming bells were now emanating from disc, synchronized to match the film's action. This was not a musical, but the experiment that gave birth to them. You can see some of the Vitaphone shorts by typing "Vitaphone shorts" into Google. It should be the first address returned.
The Singing Fool (1928)The Singing Fool (1928)
Like The Jazz Singer, the opening parts of this 1928 film use caption slides in place of speech. Enjoy it for its Jazz age settings, the grand costumes, and of course for Jolson's singing. Available at WBShop.com for 19.95.

Known for its moving camera versus the static camera of the early talkies, this is a 1929 backstage musical. The dialogue is obscured due to bad sound technology.
The Broadway Melody (Special Edition)The Broadway Melody (Special Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $2.18
The second winner of the Oscar for Best Picture has a very creaky love story as a vehicle to hold together the singing and dancing. "The Wedding of the Painted Doll" number was in Technicolor but the color print is presumed lost.
HallelujahHallelujah
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.36
1929 film that is part drama and part musical featuring an entirely African American cast directed by King Vidor in his first talking picture. Its stereotypes will probably make modern audiences uncomfortable, but it is a remarkably sensitive film considering its era. Also included on the DVD are two additional musical numbers by Nina Mae McKinney, who played Chick in the film.

Buy new: $42.99 / Used from: $37.99
These are the Marx Bros. films from 1929-1933. Cocoanuts, their first film, has the most music, although all have some music and they would all best be judged comedy/musicals.

The most cost-effective way to own "Glorifying the American Girl" (1929), "The Great Gabbo" (1929), "Check and Double Check" (1930), "Dixiana" (1930), "Reaching for the Moon" (1930), "Palooka" (1934) and "King Kelly of the U.S.A" (1934).
Say It With Songs(1929)Say It With Songs(1929)
Al Jolson's 1929 first all-talkie and his first film in which he did not don black-face was also his first flop. Made to premiere on Vitaphone's third anniversary, Warner Bros. trotted out the parental tear-jerker formula one time too many. The film made respectable money, but for once the word of mouth was bad on a Jolson film. Available at WBShop.com for 19.95.
The Vagabond LoverThe Vagabond Lover

Actually the sound and video are exceptionally clear on this print. The musical performances are quite good, but the acting is very wooden. Marie Dressler steals the show in her comic performance as a society matron.
Half Shot at SunriseHalf Shot at Sunrise
Buy new: $7.98 / Used from: $2.99
1930 musical comedy starring Wheeler and Woolsey. They were unusually fortunate in having good musical numbers in their films - their songs & dances are always a highlight. Besides the Wheeler & Lee duet (`Whistling the Blues Away'), Woolsey gets to spoof Nijinsky (`Nothing But Love'), while dancing in his underwear. A bit bizarre, but effective.
King of Jazz [VHS]King of Jazz [VHS]

Made in 1930, this musical revue presents its numbers around the orchestra leader Paul Whiteman with performances including those by a very young Bing Crosby. Also, it was filmed entirely in two-strip Technicolor.

Buy new: $53.99 / Used from: $34.99
While audiences were suffering through "Golden Dawn" and "Howdy Broadway", Paramount & Ernst Lubitsch were making some of the great precode musicals of the early talkie era. This 4 disc set includes: The Love Parade (1929) 109 min. Monte Carlo (1930) 90 min. The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) 89 min. One Hour With You (1932) 78 min. Highly recommended.
Mammy (1930) [VHS]Mammy (1930) [VHS]

It's obvious why this 1930 Jolson film is not on DVD and probably never will be. Great music, but probably just too offensive.
Puttin' on the RitzPuttin' on the Ritz by Harry Richman
Buy used from: $6.97
Soundtrack from the 1930 movie/musical. The movie itself is not on VHS or DVD. Richman played half of a singing duo that let success go to his head. He is blinded by a batch of bad prohibition era booze and sneaks in to hear his partner's new show, where she is a success.
Song o My Heart [VHS]Song o My Heart [VHS]
Buy used from: $22.83
The dialogue is sometimes obscured by wear in this 1930 film, in particular since most all the actors are Irish and offer heavy brogues. However, the singing never is, with McCormack's seeming to overpower the technology of the time. Note the appearance of a very young Maureen O'Sullivan.
Whoopee [VHS]Whoopee [VHS]
Buy used from: $29.49
In 1930 Eddie Cantor was at the height of his popularity when he made this film. His character comes across much like Woody Allen's hypochondriac bit. Also, there is definitely quite a bit of pre-code material here.
Palmy DaysPalmy Days
Buy used from: $29.89
In 1931 Eddie Cantor gets mixed up with a group of phony fortune-tellers in this breezy early musical, in which he warbles the immortal "My Baby Said Yes, Yes." Dance routines are choreographed by the legendary Busby Berkeley.

In 1933, this was MGM's attempt to answer back at 42nd Street.
Diplomaniacs [VHS]Diplomaniacs [VHS]
Buy used from: $3.95
This riotous, politically incorrect 1933 classic has much in common with the Marx Brother's film "Duck Soup". Consider: (1) Both films were released in 1933. (2) Both films had a strong anti-war message to them. (3) Both films starred Louis Calhern and Edgar Kennedy. (4) Both films had hilarious musical numbers in them. This is more of a comedy than a musical.

Buy new: $53.99 / Used from: $35.24
Contains the two early talkie musicals by Astaire & Rogers. 1933's "Flying Down to Rio" didn't even have them as the stars, but it got them noticed. 1934's "The Gay Divorcee" is the first film to actually have the duo as the stars of their own film. Along with "Top Hat", "The Gay Divorcee" is probably their most memorable film. All other films in this collection are 1935 or later.
Going Hollywood [VHS]Going Hollywood [VHS]

Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.75
This 1933 film was a problem to make, and then when it came out it flopped. However, today it seems like one of Jolson's better vehicles.

Besides "Mata-Hari" this 1934 film is the only talkie starring Ramon Novarro available, in either VHS or DVD, and thus one of the only chances to hear his pleasant voice and to check out what a fine actor he was. Plus here is Jeanette McDonald at the beginning of her career before Nelson Eddy.

A Song in the Dark: The Birth of the Musical FilmA Song in the Dark: The Birth of the Musical Film by Richard Barrios

This is the most encyclopedic work I've found on the musical at the dawn of sound covering the years 1926-1934.
