My favorite horror movie. It is a beautifully filmed, realistic piece as Greg McLean's feature debut. The main characters who are a far cry from normal horror idiots.
The Thing (Collector's Edition)The Thing (Collector's Edition)

Another classic. Kurt Russell places himself securely in a genre for a number of decades to follow. A nasty little piece with some of the best creature effects ever committed to film. It makes one wish for less CGI and more natural effects work.

Another slow-burn that is a classic. Nuff said.
The Night of the HunterThe Night of the Hunter

Robert Mitchum's chilling performance and the beautiful yet haunting cinematography makes this an old horror classic. Everything about this movie from the music to the set design makes this one seems like a living, breathing dream/nightmare.

Kick-butt women unlike many of their helpless horror progenitors. The ultra-claustrophobia from the 2nd feature of director Neil Marshall made everyone take a second look at Brit horror. His first feature Dog Soldiers isn't a bad one either.
Them (a.k.a. Ils)Them (a.k.a. Ils)

Amazing. This home invasion flick is really enhanced by the chase scenes which always seem to place the villains and the victims in the same screen. French horror is on the map again after the overrated High Tension.

One of the goriest films in recent memory. A brand new one to scare the preggies since Rosemary's Baby. It's not perfect but when it hits it, it goes for the gold. The insane performance by Beatrice Dalle is a great addition to the growing catalog of women slashers.

A great new Spanish piece. Really nails all the elements and makes a movie for the youtube generation.

Take one of the most beloved film actresses of a generation and make her even more vulnerable (blind) and put her in grave danger and you've got the recipe to one of scariest movies of its decade. The final scare is the biggest jump-out-of-your-seat moments since Psycho and probably history.
Rosemary's BabyRosemary's Baby

Classic. Polanski knew what he was doing. Directing-wise that is.

The Citizen Kane of horror. Largely before it's time and containing all sorts of largely to be copied creepy bits.

One of my favorites. A European-style American classic.
Blood & Black LaceBlood & Black Lace

Technicolor slasher. Nuff said.
28 Weeks Later (Widescreen Edition)28 Weeks Later (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $1.93
The first one (28 Days Later) was good but the expanded scope really did wonders for the series. An allegory to the Iraq War that keeps the tension high for a long time.
The StrangersThe Strangers
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $1.12
A nice little movie. This home invasion flick slowly plies on the creepery keeping you on your toes the whole way through. I love slow burners but when a movie can really sustain the tension throughout an entire film that is just masterful. Any potential horror director should check this flick out as part of a course on how to maintain suspense and create dread.
The Evil DeadThe Evil Dead
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.95
Can't forget about a classic. This one really surprised me. I knew I was gonna get a bloody, fun low-budget horror movie but what I didn't expect was the high quality cinematography. A few interesting camera angles and an a first-person invisible force creates an iconic film that has given Raimi his current star platform his so well deserves.
The BroodThe Brood
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $3.30
This film starts off as an evil kids slasher but develops into a completely monstrous psycho-sexual horror. Should have seen that coming from the master of sci-fi horror Croenburg

Exploding head. Nuff said.
