![]() | Star Wars Trilogy (Widescreen Edition with Bonus Disc)
Buy used from: $17.54 1. A New Hope
2. The Return of the Jedi
3. The Empire Strikes Back
Other nerds put Empire first, but that's because men think that Han and his "I love you"/"I know" exchange are cool. Truth: Han is the universe's greatest a**hole. Whiney as he may be, Luke beats Han by far. Also, just b/c Ewoks are cute doesnt mean theyre lame, and no movie without an ending deserves top honors on *any* list.

![]() | The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)
Buy used from: $45.44 The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is so solid that its installments can't even be ranked in order of greatness. The only reason that it follows Star Wars is because its faithfulness to the novels is both a blessing and a curse -- it isn't faithful enough to be a perfect realization of the novels and it's too faithful to be three perfect movies.

![]() | The Bourne Trilogy (The Bourne Identity / The Bourne Supremacy / The Bourne Ultimatum) - Amazon.com Exclusive [HD DVD]
Buy used from: $31.00 1. The Bourne Supremacy
2. The Bourne Identity
3. The Bourne Ultimatum
Bourne is the best action hero ever to hit the silver screen. He is solidly an "action" hero (unlike various other heroes on this list), he's neither whiney (like Luke) nor an a**hole (like Han) nor a cyborg (like the Terminator) nor a geek (like Neo). Also, hes not a bumbling idiot, like the pre-Craig "Bond" incarnations.

![]() | Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $46.99 / Used from: $41.18 1. The Curse of the Black Pearl
2. At World's End
3. Dead Man's Chest
#2 and #3 were bloated and convoluted, but #3 had some redeeming moments. Also, #2 had the worst ending in trilogy history, but production values for all three films were great and the characters made you care, even in the midst of the endless swordfighting/hamster toy and/or cinematic representations of insanity sequences.

![]() | Back to the Future - The Complete Trilogy (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $11.49 1. Back to the Future
2. Back to the Future Part III
3. Back to the Future Part II
More comedy than action (which is why Pirates beat it), but a rollicking good time, nonetheless, even in its worst installment (which is why it beat Ocean's). Also, the '80s production values hold up surprisingly well (which is why it beat The Terminator). Internally, the order is obvious -- Part II was crap.

![]() | Terminator 2 - Judgment Day (The Ultimate Edition DVD)
Buy used from: $1.43 1. T2 - Judgement Day
2. The Terminator
3. T3 - Rise of the Machines
T2 was a *great* movie, but #1 was cursed with very, *very* '80's production values, which is what knocked the trilogy as a whole down below Back to the Future. That, and the fact that #3 was *awful*. Really, really *awful* -- much worse than Back to the Future Part II, which had very few redeemable features.

![]() | Ocean's Trilogy (Ocean's Eleven / Ocean's Twelve / Ocean's Thirteen)
Buy used from: $15.44 1. Ocean's Eleven
2. Ocean's Thirteen
3. Ocean's Twelve
Like the Terminator trilogy, one of Oceans installments is a complete waste of celluloid (Ocean's 12 and T3). However, I generally prefer action over comedy/fluff, and the Ocean's trilogy falls solidly into the latter category. That being said, 11 holds up *very* well in its genre, even among non-trilogy competitors, and 13 ain't bad.

![]() | The Ultimate Matrix Collection (The Matrix/ The Matrix Reloaded/ The Matrix Revolutions/ The Animatrix)
Buy used from: $13.52 Of these three movies, only "The Matrix" was worth the $10.50, which is why this trilogy falls at the absolute bottom of my list. "Reloaded" and "Revolutions" were both so forgettable (and, in many parts, nonsensical) that I can't even rank them. It speaks volumes of the quality of "The Matrix" that this trilogy made it on to my list at all.
|
![]() | Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy (Strictly Ballroom / Romeo + Juliet / Moulin Rouge)
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $15.49 Honorable Mention
I dont rank this trilogy among the rest of my choices because each of the three films has completely different characters and completely different stories. They're each *fantastic*, individually, but completely non-cohesive as a whole. Then again, if you *have* to sit down and watch a single trilogy all at once, it is right up there with Star Wars for sheer watchability.
|
![]() | Three Colors Trilogy (Blue / White / Red)
Buy used from: $44.99 Honorable Mention
I haven't actually seen any of the films in this trilogy, but it merits an Honorable Mention because I actually *want* to see it. Every other trilogy (besides the ones that made this list) has bored me so much with its first or second installments (or even its previews) that I don't even get that far...
