Recent U.S. Department of Labor data shows that the number one reason people leave their jobs is that they do not feel appreciated. Further research reveals that companies that effectively value and appreciate employees enjoy more than triple returns on equity and assets and achieve higher operating margins than companies that do not. Customer loyalty is also based on feeling appreciated--and many customers are feeling under-appreciated these days. When you’re in a leadership or management position, whether you’re the owner of a Mom-and-Pop grocery store, supervisor of a warehouse, head of the accounting department, or a Fortune 500 CEO, what you feel, think and say affects every person involved with your company or your department. You set the tone, you set the pace and you determine what is going to matter and what isn’t. And that's where the power of appreciation can make such a dynamic impact on a business. By learning to use the appreciation techniques described in The Power of Appreciation, readers will be able to combat employee apathy, poor performance low motivation, stress, lack of company loyalty and customer indifference. They will learn that increasing employee productivity, product quality, sales and customer loyalty doesn’t require a huge time or monetary outlay. It just requires a subtle shift in focus from the top. The Power of Appreication includes scientific data that follows the impact of appreciation on mind and body. It also includes real world examples of appreciation's power from companies such as Southwest Airlines, See's Candies and Ryder System, Inc.

From the Publisher
The 21st century is a century of choice – both for customers and employees. If a customer or an employee doesn’t feel valued, they will feel no loyalty toward a business and go elsewhere. If businesses don’t change and apply the principles of valuing and appreciation as part of the way they do business, they simply won’t survive. Dr. Noelle Nelson has recognized this truth and addresses it brilliantly in her book, The Power of Appreciation in Business: How an Obsession with Value Increases Performance, Productivity and Profits. Using the latest scientific research, and examples from Southwest Airlines and other people-centered value-oriented companies, Dr. Nelson shows, step by step, how to make any business more powerful and successful, by doing nothing more than changing the way the business interacts with employees and customers. Her book offers businesses the amazing opportunity to grow without adding a penny in marketing, production or personnel costs.
The Power of Appreciation in Business shows how appreciation is the secret weapon of the world’s most successful companies; how an obsession with the value of the people in and around the business turns into profits; how even employee or customer grievances provide potent productivity and profit opportunities; how businesses can use the latest scientific knowledge about the human mind and how we interact with others to succeed when competitors struggle. The Power of Appreciation in Business can contribute significantly to any business’s success.
From the Author
For almost two decades, both as a clinical psychologist and trial consultant, I have had the woeful privilege of seeing the dark side of business: employees suing employers; customers suing businesses; companies suing each other for a whole host of reasons. But the most common reason, underlying whatever the stated complaint, is lack of appreciation.
These lawsuits merely highlight what has become "the elephant in the living room" of business, the problem everybody knows about but nobody wants to acknowledge: lack of appreciation in the workplace cripples performance, productivity and profitability.
Failure to appreciate in the workplace breeds employee stress, poor performance, customer indifference and lawsuits. The dollars lost each day by business because of this comes to a staggering $250 to $300 billion a year!
Yet appreciation sounds simple, like something we all know how to do. So why does the U.S. Department of Labor tell us that the number one reason people leave their jobs is--lack of appreciation? And why, although customer satisfaction may be good, customer loyalty is not? Perhaps because we really don’t know how to value people in a way that will motivate them, and in turn, increase company profits. Perhaps because we don’t know what appreciation is all about and how to use it most effectively. That’s why I wrote "The Power of Appreciation in Business," because of my respect for the tremendous power of appreciation, and my belief that it has a very necessary and important place in the business world.

A Magic Bullet for Increasing Morale & Profits
Most of us who've worked in the corporate world have occasionally felt a slight sense of dread as we came to work to deal with employee and customer complaints. If you heard there was a fast, cheap, easy and effective management approach that takes stressful work situations and transforms them into higher productivity and better morale... and is especially powerful for dealing with conflicts... would you be interested?
Author Noelle Nelson provides an exceptionally clear technique for bringing appreciation into the workplace, describing practical ideas managers can put to work immediately for little to no additional cost in THE POWER OF APPRECIATION IN BUSINESS. Nelson cites recent scientific research on the effects of appreciation on the brain and the heart, and describes how appreciation works to remove resistance while encouraging people to do their very best. Best of all, Nelson includes step-by-step directions for implementing these techniques in ways that have proven to be wildly successful in businesses such as See's Candies, Ryder, and Southwest Airlines.
I love the way this book explodes many management myths, and explains why so many corporate appreciation tools such as Employee of the Month programs and customer satisfaction surveys so often prove to be ineffective. THE POWER OF APPRECIATION is a powerful "magic bullet" that may just be what your business needs to improve profitablity and morale at the same time. Find out how good your business can get!
NOT just another "How to succeed in biz book"!
I've read a lot of business books over the years, but the title of this one intrigued me. This book is a real wake-up call as to why a business or a department isn't dynamic and prosperous. It's full of down to earth practical tools and great examples from companies like Southwest Airlines, See's Candies, etc., that show you how to get your business going the way you really want it to. And the solution to making these positive changes is not a complicated, time or revenue consuming task... Dr. Nelson explains how to make noticeable improvements in every dimension of your business by simply paying attention to your businesses "attitude". It sure makes a difference to my bottom line.
The Power of Appreciation in Business by Noelle Nelson
I can't recommend this book enough. My business deals with people everyday and it has had a noticable increase since I have been utilizing the methods in this book. Now I have to start a waiting list as there are no more slots available!
