You also get high-definition Blu-ray Disc read/write capability, which supports full 1080p HD video as well as up to 5.1 discrete channels of uncompressed digital audio. The Blu-ray system is backwards-compatible with standard DVDs and CDs, enabling you to enjoy your digital library for years to come. The optical drive can also write a full range of disc formats, including dual-layer DVD discs.
Under the hood, it's powered by the 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, which offers a super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus speed and extra-large 3 MB L2 cache. Part of Intel's 45-nanometer (nm) Penryn series, this processor boosts speed and reduces power requirements. This Sony PC is Energy Star 4.0 certified, and has received a Silver EPEAT designation for meeting standards to help reduce its environmental impact. Additionally, it is RoHS-compliant, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances.
It also features dual 320 GB hard drives (for a 640 GB total), 3 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), Gigabit Ethernet and quad-mode Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n) networking, Memory Stick and SD card slots, both PCMCIA and ExpressCard expansion, Nvidia GeForce 8400M with up to 1535 MB of available memory (256 MB discrete), and pre-installed Windows Home Premium (SP1) operating system.
The Basics
- Processor: Experience improved energy efficiency with the 45nm Penryn series Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, which has a 2.10 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 3 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy and provides excellent high-definition video rendering via Intel's HD Boost.
The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:
- Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
- Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
- Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
- Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.
- Hard Drive: This system offers a total of 620 GB of hard disk drive space from two 320 GB drives (7200 RPM), offering a wealth of storage space for your multimedia collection--up to 60 hours of recorded HD programming. These Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives also quicken the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC5300, 1 x 2 GB, 2 x 1 GB) helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this PC's video card. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. This notebook has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: This Sony All-in-One is capable of both playing back Blu-ray Disc movies in stunning clarity, as well as burning HD Camcorder content in its original 1080p high-definition resolution to BD-RE/BD-RE DL (dual layer) discs (25 GB single layer disc to 50 GB on a double layer disc). It will also play your current library of purchased and burned disc content. This notebook can also write standard DVD and CD media. The BD drive offers 2x speeds for reading and writing BD-RE discs, 1x BD-RE DL writing, as well as offering the following read speeds: 2x BD-R/BD-RE and 1.6x BD-R/RE DL. It also offers the following write speeds for standard DVD and CD discs: 2.4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 8x for single-layer DVD+R and DVD-R, 8x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-RW, 8x CD-R/RW, and 5x for DVD-RAM.
- Keyboard & Mouse: The included wireless keyboard and mouse have a matching aluminum style. It also comes with a full-featured remote control for controlling both PC and TV functions.
The 22-inch LCD panel has an amazing 1680 x 1050-pixel resolution. And thanks to Sony's XBRITE-HiColor panel technology, the flat-panel screen will deliver dazzling colors and sharp images whether displaying a DVD movie, television show, or web content. It delivers deep blacks and bright whites, true-to-life color, and razor-sharp detail. And with a glare filter and anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection, you’ll experience a beautifully clear image.
Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce 8400M graphics card, which provides up to 1535 MB of available RAM/video memory (256 MB dedicated video RAM) for unmatched HD video performance on a notebook PC. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 and High Dynamic-Range Lighting (HDR), the 8400M lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications.
You can connect a cable/satellite set-top box to this All-in-One via an S-Video or RF connection. This desktop includes integrated NTSC (standard broadcast) and ATSC (digital, HD) TV tuners. It also includes an integrated Intel High Definition Audio card, stereo speakers (3 watts apiece for 6 watts of total power) and an internal 5-watt subwoofer.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 4965AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and wi-fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You also get super-fast wired connectivity, with a Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000).
It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (in addition to a PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connectivity options:
- 5 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players

Great Unit
I purchased this machine to upgrade from a 3 1/2 year old Vaio desktop. It is a solid performing unit. The screen is bright and clear. The blu ray player/recorder is great and the amount of material you can record to a blu ray disc is amazing. It is a 5 star unit except for one thing. The reason I am giving it a 4 star review is because of all the crapware that comes preloaded on it that most people don't want anyway, the most irritating to me is aol, which to me is the ultimate in crapware and is very hard to remove. My old unit gave you a choice with aol, use it or don't use it, this one does not. It comes with no backup software which is typical of Sony but I didn't get any with my old unit either. I would like to at a minimum have a hard copy of the operating system software. The computer sets up simply. The diagram illustrating the connecting points that comes with the unit is easy to follow. I had it running in less than an hour. I've had zero driver problems and all but two of my old XP programs run just fine on the Vista system. I was prepared for programming issues when I decide to upgrade to this machine and Vista, but it was minimal. In my view the only thing Sony could do to improve this machine is to not overload it with crapware a lot of purchasers will probably not want, especially aol. One small issue is that the wireless keyboard does not have indicator lights or a backlight and it is hard to see if the number lock and cap lock is on or off. This is my fourth Sony Vaio computer and the best so far.
No support for ATSC tuner on cable
Although the computer specs for this system are incredible, I had planned on using it in my kitchen, so the HD TV capability was very important to me. I had planned on connecting the ATSC port directly to my cable provider, but after three hours of struggling along with SONY tech support, the third level support technician discovered in his documentation that the ATSC tuner will work only with a digital anntena, and not with digital cable. He suggested that I use a set-top box, but that's going to clutter my kitchen counter, so that's not a viable solution for me.
I'm not a happy camper.
Excellent As an all in one multi-media PC
I recently got this to replace a Dell Vostro 200 Slimline + 22 inch Dell Ultrasharp monitor. The LV has roughly the same specs as my Dell combo so why did I do the up grade and was it worth it?
First the price: I paid around $800 shipped for this. I was able to sell my Dell combo for $250 which makes this a $550 upgrade.
My overall impressions so far: Better than the Dell in every respect! A much better multi media system by far.
The main benefits:
1. In my old system I had a wire to connect external Bose Monitor speakers to the PC (The speaker you can attach to the Dell monitor is simply one of the worst out there), and another from the power to an outlet. I also had another wire to connect a logitech web cam from the monitor to the computer. The Dell did not have the fast n class wifi, so I had another wire to connect a Linksys n class wifi receiver, I also had to connect a usb from my monitor to the PC and of course the DVI cable from the PC to the monitor. Finally I had 2 wires for an external blu ray drive. One for the usb and another for the power. So I went from 8 wires in my core PC/monitor (not even counting the printer) to 1. 8 to 1 is a whole lot simpler and cleaner.
2. In terms of core performance, the multi media capabilities of the Vaio is far superior to the Dell, the graphics card is much better and the fact that the Blu Ray player is integrated into Vista Media Center makes it much nicer.
3. The Dell did not have a remote for the media center, the Sony Vaio has a pretty decent remote.
When considering the Vaio I also considered the Apple iMac. The iMac has much better every day software and it does not have the huge amounts of trial software that the Sony comes with. But unlike the iMac the Sony monitor is widescreen and the in built multi media capabilities are much better on the Vaio as are the in built speakers. In terms of build quality they are about the same. I have both a Sony style store and Apple store a mile or so from my home so I know both products pretty well. Mac OS is an excellent everyday system mainly because it boots up pretty fast. But for multimedia like watching movies, editing photos and using skype and such I find Mac OS to be really slow even with their very high quality hardware. I watched a DVD on both an iMac and the Sony same movie. The scaling and picture on the Sony (perhaps due to vista media center) was superior as was the audio.
If you're looking for a nice stylish all in one PC this is an excellent choice. I personally prefer the 22 inch to the 24 inch for my space, although 1080p would have been nice.
