About the Author

Her Imperial Highness Princess Hisako of Takamado lives with her husband and three daughters in Tokyo. A graduate of Girton College, Cambridge, she has always been interested in wildlife and natural phenomena, and counts among her hobbies bird watching and growing orchids. Her two recent trips to the Arctic and her participation in a number of ocean-related environmental projects led to the creation of Lulie. This is her second book.

Warabé Aska has published over a dozen children's books. He is a painter whose work has been selected for UNICEF greeting cards and who has received several awards throughout the world. Aska draws much of his creative energy from the environment. His travels to the Canadian Arctic inspired the art for this book.

The publication of Lulie is assisted by Icebridge, a forum of scientists and educators dedicated to the promotion of knowledge about the polar regions and the oceans, and by UNICEF. UNICEF is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child in its work to meet the essential needs of all children.

Customer Reviews

Excellent journey of an unlikely hero's unlikely dream.4
Even though Lulie is loved and secure in his Arctic home, he knows he must travel to the other end of the world to find some other part of himself. Along the way he is questioned by others and himself, but never ridiculed and always supported. Beautiful illustrations create a surreal feel to the entire journey, while showing the oneness and continuity of all things in all places. Information about the various species encountered is included at the end of the book
