Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
To appreciate this quirky vegan cookbook, readers must welcome the author's offhand, rambling style. A chatty Brooklynite who hosts her own public access cooking show, she scatters stories about her mother, her friends and her politics among recipes for goodies like Fresh Corn Fritters and Curried Split Pea Soup. In one anecdote, she writes that her mother liked the scones from "one of those overpriced French cafes in Union Square," prompting the author to create Glazed Orange scones in her mother's honor, and the sweet, rich result rivals the average "overpriced café" model. BBQ Pomegranate Tofu is actually baked, not barbecued, but still the tofu is rich and smoky, terrific over rice or packed into heroes. Even better, the vegan iterations of Spanakopita and Seitan-Portobello Stroganoff so closely approximate the traditional versions that even the pickiest eaters would happily trade one for the other. And although there's no chicken broth in Matzoh Ball Soup, the vegetable stock is hearty enough to cure the fiercest cold. Best of all, and rare in a vegan cookbook, the author provides several appealing dairy-free desserts that are tasty enough to fool most omnivores, yet unique enough to thrill any vegan who just can't face another tofu ice cream bar.

"This fun and creative book is delicious for people like me, who don't eat pets!"

"(The book) has got plenty of attitude, and the killer recipes to back it up. Watch out Betty Crocker."

I'm in love with this cookbook
This woman is a kitchen goddess. I am not a vegan (maybe I should say that I am a middle aged Republican with heart disease so no one thinks I am in love with the author ;^). But I am in love with this book. I have lost track of how many copies I have given to family and friends. While I have many favorite cookbooks, more meals appear on our table out of this book than the next two combined.
My single favorite meal from this book is the pomegranate barbecue tofu (which I usually make with seitan or tempeh instead of tofu -- just because she is a goddess doesn't mean you can't play with the recipes) with coconut rice. Horseradish tofu is another staple along with lemon corn waffles with blueberry sauce, cold udon noodles with peanut sauce -- not to mention the simple sides like sweet potato fire. And her scones are to live for (this is healthful food after all, why eat something that will make you die?).
The author does have a lot of attitude -- and leftist politics. If you are offended by this, get over it: the food is worth swallowing your politics (along with the tamarind sauce).
Best Vegan Cookbook Out There
I have bought several vegan cookbooks before this one, and have been disappointed in all of them. This is by far the best. This is not a book about how to recreate standard meat dishes with meat substitutes, but rather a book with tons of fantastic recipes that do not not contain animal products. There are a few ingredients that are hard to find, but not many, and they are mostly optional.
Every recipe I have made has been terrific. Now I need to get the new cookbook, too! I liked the muffins so much that I made three batches of different ones today. Soooooo good.
not as advertised
I was SOOO looking forward to this cookbook-after all the good reviews. My youngest daughter is allergic to milk products-and I am vegetarian... so, I am in search of good non-milk, vegetarian dishes that my meat-eating, more traditional meals, husband would enjoy so that I don't have to make 2 or 3 different meals for every dinner. Admittedly, I only made one recipe-a desert-which came out ok-although the rum SURE was the MAIN ingredient, taste-wise-not really a family desert. Then, I started looking through the book-and couldn't find any entrees that I thought he'd enjoy-I thought I'd really like them, but the recipes are not for the unadventurous.
The OTHER thing I realized, which is why the title of my review, is that she periodically uses profanity. It is not on ALL of the pages and is only in some of the descriptions. However, I was not expecting a cookbook to include such words-and I am not comfortable having a book like that in the house as my children are beginning to learn how to read-and enjoy reading my cookbooks. That is NOT where I want them to hear those words. What a shame. I would have kept the book around, if it hadn't been for that. At least I would have had some variety for my husband to eat-even if they weren't his favorite dishes. So... I am still looking for a good vegan cookbook for the whole family. This was NOT it.
