Product Description

As the largest living group on earth, insects can provide us with insight into adaptation, evolution, and survival. The 2nd edition of this standard text for insect physiology courses and entomologists provides the most comprehensive analysis of the systems that make insects important contributors to our environment. Physiological Systems in Insects discusses the role of insect molecular biology, nueroendocrinology, biochemistry, and genetics in our understanding of insects. Organized according to insect physiological functions, this book is fully updated with the latest and foundational research that has influenced understanding of the patterns and processes of insects.

* Full update of a widely used text for students and researchers in entomology and zoology
* Includes recent research that uses molecular techniques to uncover physiological mechanisms
* Includes a glossary of physiological terms
* New, extended section on locomotive systems
* Provides abundant figures derived from scientific reports

Review
"In prose that is both lucid and informed, Klowden provides a remarkably holistic yet detailed view of the most successful organisms on the planet. The author examines the 'hows' of insect systems and, equally importantly, offers answers to provocative evolutionary 'why' questions. ...Those seeking an integrated treatment of insect physiology will be richly rewarded with this author as a guide."
-Carol Sheppard, Dept of Entomology, Washington State University (December 2001)
"This is an excellent text. It is concise in organization and there is uniformity of presentation of figures that is pleasing. It is very readable and contains some new information not available elsewhere. The viewpoint of the author is refreshing."
-INSECT PHYSIOLOGY ONLINE (December 2001)

From the Back Cover
Physiological Systems in Insects is an overview of the biological basis for the preeminent role played by insects in global ecology. The indisputable importance of insects in human health and agriculture, as well as their dominant place in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, makes an understanding of insects important not only to entomologists but also to all biologists. Insects serve as excellent models of basic physiology because of the uncanny similarities between the processes in insects and vertebrates. Although insects constitute a very diverse group of animals, the text considers the broad functional aspect of their success without delving into their classification. It thus provides a wealth of information in an easy-to-read format.

Key Features
* Comprehensive descriptions of physiological systems
* Clear figures adapted from scientific reports
* Glossary of physiological terms
* Complete references to past and present research

Insect physiology5
this is a very useful book, im an entomology major and this wasnt a required book for my class but i bought it and found it to be very helpful for sections that were not clearly explained in class.
