HO! HO! HUH?
This book was too disjointed to follow the plot. Noah Blake has returned to his hometown after 15 years and 2 in prison for manslaughter. All the former popular gang in high school take him under their wings, giving him a job in a security business, a place to stay, etc. The rest of the townspeople make scathing remarks to him and about him. The heroine has been in love with him since high school and practically throws herself at him. The love scene is so fast it isn't worth it. He rides a Harley throughout the book (even in the last scene leaving their wedding in a snowfall! Anyone ever try to ride a motorcycle in the snow??) Not an especially good read, in my opinion.
Most pathetic heroine ever
From the back cover:
Noah's come home!
Abby Brannon and her father, Charlie, run the Caroline Diner--the place where everyone in town comes for Abby's special brand of TLC. Abby longs to travel, to see other place--to have someone take care of her for once. And she has someone special in mind for that job. The trouble is, no one knows what happened to Noah Blake after he disappeared from New Skye fifteen years ago.
Noah's return sends a shock wave through the town--especially when everyone starts talking about where he's been. But should Abby believe what she hears, or should she trust her heart?
And my review:
I'd read one of Lynette Kent's "Carolina Diner" books before, and found it fairly enjoyable, so I decided to give ABBY'S CHRISTMAS a try. I wasn't even able to get halfway through because the heroine was so pathetic that it made me sick.
Okay, I'll paint the picture for you...Abby has been carrying a torch for Noah ever since high school. Okay, fine. But did they ever date, even once? No. Did he ever kiss her? No. Did he ever show any interest in her whatsoever? No. He's been away for fifteen years, and has he ever tried to contact her even once during that time? No. Did he ever leave anyone any hope that he'd ever come back? No--in fact much of the town was happy to think that he was gone for good.
So the heroine has had no romantic past with the hero, not even a friendship. They were merely acquaintances who might have said "hi" when passing each other on the street. Yet the heroine has put her life on hold for 15 years waiting for him to come back, when he's never given her any indication of interest or that he might ever return? Pathetic! That sure didn't make sense. She's put aside her dreams of travel and still lives with her dad (who treats her like a stupid child) and works for him, even though she'd love to have a business of her own. She's in her 30's and still lives with Daddy? How pathetic is that? It's not like she's living with her dad because he's on his deathbed or something like that, but because she's too much of a child to grow up and leave home like any normal adult would do. She's just sitting around waiting for "Prince Charming" to rescue her. Get real.
And then when the hero shows up, she immediately throws herself at him, and continues to throw herself at him every opportunity she gets, even though he's made it clear that he's not interested. And I thought the heroine couldn't get any more feeble than she already was. The whole time I was reading I wanted to smack her one and tell her to get some self-respect.
I can't recommend this, not unless you like books that make you want to scream at the characters.
