Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-A little girl's imagination allows her to overcome the boredom of a rainy day and bring her dreams to life. Nell wishes that she had someone to play with. She draws an elf who comes to life and says, There is no excuse for being bored. He convinces her to create a party full of little elf friends and they sing and dance and eat chocolate chips. The beige and golden tones used in many of the colored pencil, pastel, and gouache illustrations give them the feeling of a time gone by. The red-and-white polk-dotted endpapers introduce a pattern that is carried throughout the book, from tables and toadstools to Nell's jacket and pointed elfin hats. Not a must-buy title, but a nice choice for quiet sharing with a child who loves to live in the imagination.-Genevieve Gallagher, Murray Elementary School, Charlottesville, VA

From the Publisher
Jane Cowen-Fletcher’s cheerful tale about the delights of the imagination reminds us it doesn’t take much to keep boredom at bay.

From the Author
JANE COWEN-FLETCHER: "When I was a child, there were many elves in my life, always just out of view. In the process of illustrating this book, I have lured them into view (with chocolate chips), and have finally had the elf party I’ve longed for all these years. I encourage every reader to pick up pencil or crayon and draw out the elves hiding inside of you. It may take a while for them to spring to life, but with all that drawing, I promise you will never, ever be bored!"

Adorable!4
Very cute story about a little girl who is bored inside on a rainy day and wishes she had a playmate. She draws a picture of an elf and he comes to life and the fun begins. I read this to my son who is almost three and he really likes the story. The only problem I have is in the beginning the girl uses the words "dumb" and "boring" which are some negative words I was trying to keep from my son for as long as possible. Aside from that, the rest of the book is very appropriate and the illustrations are gorgeous in a vintage style almost.
