Product Description

Pets are such a big part of so many of our lives. As any pet lover knows, a wagging tail or a tender purr can soothe the soul after a hard day. And sometimes, the presence of dogs and cats in our lives can do even more. In these delightful books, Callie Smith Grant collects stories that celebrate the dogs and cats in our lives--stories that touch our hearts, renew our spirit, and show us how God created these beasts for unique purposes. A funny little dog named Prince earns his title by protecting the children of the house. A "dickens of a cat" gives a cancer survivor something else to think about. A lively litter of puppies soothes a troubled child. A scrawny kitten helps an anorexic girl begin to eat. Well-known authors, including Melody Carlson, Tracie Peterson, and Robert Benson, as well as new voices share their inspirational true stories of these otherwise ordinary cats and dogs whose presence in the lives of humans make them remarkable. Each book also includes interesting sidebars, memorable quotes, helpful hints for living with dogs and cats, and forewords by H. Norman Wright. The stories are warm, captivating, and ideal for a good curl-up-and-read or for a gift to any pet lover. Cat lovers, dog lovers, and anyone who likes to read uplifting stories will cherish these books.

From the Back Cover
"I had no doubt that whoever had been out there had meant to harm me but had been foiled by one small, determined dog." What would we do without our dogs? They are there for us when things are going great and when we are at our worst. And they still love us. Dogs bring an intense loyalty and love to our lives that no other pet--or human!--can match. When we want to give up, they come to us with wagging tails and goofy smiles, asking to go for a walk or play tug-of-war. Nothing can lift our spirits like our dogs. In this heartwarming collection of true stories, you will meet many dogs--some big, some small, some rambunctious, and some serene. Each of them has played an important part in the lives of their humans. You'll meet a three-legged survivor who helps heal a broken family, a funny mutt who brings laughter to a house filled with anxiety, a local celebrity pup who brings smiles and customers to a couple's store, and many more ordinary and extraordinary canines. So share a treat with the special dog in your life and dig in to these uplifting tales. Callie Smith Grant is the author of several nonfiction books for both adults and young readers, as well as many animal-themed stories and poems that can be seen in Guideposts anthologies and in magazines such as Small Farmer's Journal.

A dog lover's delight!4
Reviewed by Julina K. Mills

Compiled and edited by Callie Smith Grant, this collection of short stories submitted by dog owners captures the reader with anecdotes of pets that made a difference in their people's lives. Although occasionally slow paced, the book is generally well-written and is a quick read that can be put down after each chapter without feeling like any part of the story is lost. Celebrity quotes in highlighted boxes are scattered throughout the pages and add to the casual and friendly feel of this book.

Heartwarming and uplifting, the stories in A Prince Among Dogs share the deep emotional bond that forms when a four-footed friend touches the life of someone in need. With unconditional love and patience, the dogs in this book change the lives of the people they come into contact with... some over a lifetime, and some in just a few hours.

Throughout the book you will meet a variety of canine characters, including a tiny blind mongrel who mourns the loss of her master to cancer, a smiling spaniel-collie cross who acts as a personal trainer, and a "three-legged survivor" who helps to heal a broken family.

Contributing authors include individuals from diverse backgrounds including a dog trainer, freelance writers, a marketing director, and a social worker, among other professions. Although their personal histories may be drastically different, each contributor is a linked by a common thread - the thread that connects them to man's best friend.

Armchair Interviews says: A nice tale for dog lovers-and you know who you are!

Sweet But Superficial...2
I typically enjoy reading stories of redemption as respects both people and animals, so I thought this book would be right up my alley. However, while there are indeed some very sweet stories contained within this book, I found it somewhat off-putting that there were a number of them where the person was in a bad place (either figuratively or literally... sometimes both) and a dog managed to help get them through that particularly hard row in their lives and then, right when things begin to go better for them, they somehow manage to separate from that same dog who stuck by them through the hard times. Now I realize that sometimes, circumstances just don't allow people to stick together with their pets, but that didn't seem to be the case in some of the stories in this book. Perhaps it's the way the stories are written, but I cannot imagine just giving up a pet who has helped get you through some really hard times, in some cases, seemingly nonchalantly. Again, this could possibly be attributed to the way the stories were written, but even so, that aspect took a lot of the pleasure out of reading this particular book. You don't just toss off the pet after he/she has served his/her purpose in your life! I'm not saying the people put the dogs back out on the street or anything like that, but to just give away a pet who has done so much for you seems rather callous nevertheless. Because of this, I cannot say I enjoyed this book all that much. Some of the individual stories were lovely, but a few too many others left me rather cold because of what I perceived as a certain lack of feeling on the part of some of the protagonists within the stories.

very good5
Enjoyed the book, a quick read. My grandchildren also enjoyed it (8 and 10yr old). Purchase process went smoothly.
