Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
Most woodworking plans call for cut, dimensioned dead wood. Warnes creates projects out of living sticks that are planted in the ground. The results can be somewhat absurd but are wonderful all the same. This fusion of carpentry and gardening is used to create a variety of chairs, an arch, an arbor, fences, and a dome. Warnes is from England, but gardener/carpenters could probably do this in most temperate climates. An appealing if somewhat unusual title, this should be considered for comprehensive collections

Review
Jon Warnes describes the process of making a range of living willow structures and shapes, using diagrams, photographs and clear instructions. Many of the ideas are particularly relevant to schools, although perhaps more detail would be needed for the complete beginner leading a project with a class. The book recommends visiting some places for inspiration (be warned that it includes the Earth Centre in Doncaster which is now closed). The list of suppliers given on the Search Press website is up to date and potentially invaluable.-START
About the Author
Jon Warnes developed a keen interest in working with wood after volunteering to do some coppicing work in the early nineties. Since then he has developed his woodland craft skills and he now runs regular rustic furniture courses at the Centre of Alternative Technology in Mid Wales, the the Green Wood Trust in Shropshire. He also runs living willow courses which include demonstrations on how to make living willow chairs.

Great ideas for living sculpture
If you've never heard of willow sculpture, this is a great introduction. If you've ever wanted to try willow sculpture, this book will give you the basic "how to" knowledge and lots of ideas.
Fun garden projects
I got this book for my mother, an 84-year-old avid gardener and she was delighted. It's a small book from England and has lots of photos of garden projects to do with living willow. I think it was well worth the inexpensive price and we both look forward to trying some of the projects described.
Inspirational!
Excellent photos. Practical how-to advice. After looking through this book I was ready to quit work and start making willow sculpture. These sculptures will bring out the kid in you. The catch is, I have to wait till late winter to harvest the willows. Willow sculpture is big in the UK and most examples are from there. You'll need to convert information for your local growing conditions and locally available species of will.
