From the Inside Flap
This book, ALL ABOUT TREES (IN & AROUND HOUSTON) will tell you all that you need to know to maintain your trees if you live in or around Houston. There are more than 20,000 different kinds of trees in the world, 1,000 in the United States alone. But in Houston, there are only a dozen or so trees that I plan to discuss. Chances are these are the ones you have. So this book is specializing, especially for you. I'll tell you which trees grow the fastest, the ones that live the longest, and how to plant them. I'll tell you trees that are best for Houston according to climate and soil conditions and how to care for them, trim them, and treat them for any ailment they might have and, most important, when to call on an expert. My father was in the tree business since 1968. As a young boy, I tagged along with him whenever I could. He taught me ALL ABOUT TREES. My staff and I have continued to learn by keeping current with the improved methods of caring for trees. Everything we know that is pertinent for you to know about your trees, this book will tell you. Whatever you can't understand or want explained in greater detail, just call me by dialing: (713) F-O-S-T-E-R-S

From the Back Cover
John Foster, arborist and owner of Foster?s Tree Service tells in this book, ALL ABOUT TREES, everything you need to know to choose, plant and maintain your trees.

About the Author
John Foster is a 4th generation "Tree Man." His grandfather and great-grandfather were Lumbermen; they knew their trees. Although they were in the business of cutting trees which is frowned upon today by environmentalists everywhere, there are still those around who cut trees in planned and managed areas, a profession known as "Urban Forestry." John's father, Ove (O.V.) made a decision early in life to study the physiology of trees. He dedicated more than half his life to the preservation of valuable trees in the Texas Gulf Coast area. His name was known throughout the area as the ?Arborist to call when a homeowner needed help with their trees." While most of his friends were out playing baseball or football, John spent his afternoons with his dad, diagnosing tree problems. It soon became second nature for Ove to ask young John's opinion on various trees and, at age 14, John was one of the youngest persons in the state to become licensed by the Structural Pest Control Board, the state agency governing licensing of both certified applicators and the diagnosis of problems in trees. In 1983 John went to California for over a year to work for the Forestry Department, learning more about the physiology of trees. Thus, his hands-on experience and general knowledge has made him one of the foremost authorities on trees for the Texas Gulf Coast. John's love for trees in evident in his expression as he leans against a tree or surveys it for damage, and he gives straight answers to homeowners. He tells them approximately how long their tree will live, that he can keep it alive for so many months or years, or when he feels they will have to cut it down. Whatever the answer, you can be certain that it's the truth and that it's told to you by an expert.

All About Trees5
I like this book because it's short, succinct and tells what you want to know -- what actually grows! Written by an arborist who has been taking care of Houston-area trees for many years, this book doesn't give you a huge list of what you CAN grow. It tells you which trees DO grow well and easily in this climate and have the least problems, along with how to take care of them. Also tells which commonly-planted trees to avoid. Very valuable, IMO, though I have not had long to put it into practice.
