Readers will learn to identify abstract patterns, the relationships between shapes and how to evoke an emotional response from their paintings in The Painterly Approach. They will discover what the painterly approach is and how to define an object by planes of color and value rather than by line. The focus is placed on the abstract pattern rather than in actual objects, on relationships between shapes rather than on detail and on provoking an emotional response rather than absolute realism. The reader will move beyond the fundaments to more advanced theories of perspective, brushstroking, edges, form and shadows. Finally, a step-by-step approach to painting using two demonstrations, one working alla prima, and the other en plein air show how to apply the painterly approach from start to finish.
This title focuses on seeing shapes and values - a concept that is used by many successful artists but is rarely taught.
The teachings in the book are broad and can be applied to any medium, since they relate to expression and emotion in painting.
Artists are always looking to improve the way they visualize their art - to see in a more holistic manner - and this title teaches them the techniques to achieve this goal.

Excellent Addition to Your Art Instruction Library
Bob Rohm's, "The Painterly Approach," is an excellent addition to any artist's library for learning the keys and some advanced concepts of oil painting. I especially enjoyed his discussion on the difference between the "linear approach" to oil painting and the "painterly approach." One of the best instruction books I've ever read. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their oil and plein air skills.
Inspirational How-To with some of Bob's best work
I took a workshop with Bob Rohm about ten years ago in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. He got me started in pastels and I've loved them ever since. I was anxious to get this book as soon as I saw it appear on Amazon. The examples are great, the explanations are concise, well written, and well illustrated; and the work in the book is truly inspirational. This is one of those books that you can review over and over not only for what it teaches, but also to simply enjoy all of those beautiful paintings in both oil and pastel. For the price you can get it on Amazon, it's really a no-brainer. And you should be happy that you did get it for many years to come.
Finally, information I can understand and use!
This book is one of dozens I have purchased over the years and it is the first that is written in plain language that is easy to understand. Yes, there is a lot of reitteration, the same principles stated over and over, as in all instructional books...but this book is different. It actually explains procedures and ideas in basic language. I am extremely pleased with this purchase and recommend it to anyone not already a 'professional artist', who knows it all.
