Avicenna and I is a love saga spanning here and hereafter. It is a journey of spirits toward immortality. Together two lovers explore the city of Hamadan in northwest of Iran, one of the oldest residences of civilization, where the tomb of one of history's most remarkable thinkers, Avicenna, lies. To ascend from what they are to what they dream to be, the lovers seek and find the spirit of Avicenna. From him, the prince of medicine, as he is called in the west and leading wise man as he is called in the east, they learn how to heal the body, the mind, the spirit, and even love, and how to tend to a wounded nature. They discover the path to immortality. Avicenna and I strips history naked of its pretensions and shatters the myth of the East as a place of unreason-deserving to be subjugated by the West-and establishes that the Italian renaissance was merely a continuation of the Persian Renaissance which occurred in the golden Era of Avicenna. In this unforgettable novel the future and the past recreate one another and set the present afire with passion for immortal wisdom, and immortal love and truth. The reader is invited to view the mind and the universe, intuition and reason, science and faith and life and death with a profoundly new understanding. The trials and tribulations of the lovers, even history, and their transcendental journey are recounted with a pen searching for the beginnings and the endings of everything-for answers God never created. So, we, humans must invent the answers as we have invented many things God did not create. This novel is an introduction in the book of answers.

A wonderful introduction to Ibn Sina and more.
This book introduces the reader to the important and too little known philosophy of the Persian scientist and philosopher, Ibn Sina (Avicenna). It is thought-provoking and informative. Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in the vast, rich traditions of Persia.
A tour-de-force!
"Avicenna and I" is an evocative, spiritual masterpiece! I commend it to the attention of anyone who wants to be swept away in a mystical world of love and enchantment. I could not put this novel down until I had finished it. I eagerly await more of Manoucher Parvin's masterful prose.
After first reading ...
... my copy of Avicenna glows with a glorious florescent yellow radiance. My beloved yellow highlighter lies next to it - utterly exhausted. My highlighter's sole mission is to catch ideas important enough to warrant its attention and robust enough to endure its caress - and it has given its life to "Avicenna and I". This is truly a novel `novel' to have warranted the touch of my highlighter - let alone demand its demise. Deeply human (intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually), it is a commanding work of a brilliant scholar and masterful story-teller that enriches, expands, and rewards the reader. Told in the context of the present, at the heart of the story is Avicenna, a Sufi and polymath (undoubtedly one of the greatest minds in history - the west calls him the prince of medicine; the east, its leading wise man) who died in 1037 AD. In this novel Avicenna wants to be reincarnated to sparkle love for Mother Nature and to heal the soul of man. Magnificent!
