Product Description

With her reader-friendly, easy-to-follow directions, a veteran horticulture teacher demonstrates all the ways to cultivate new plants—whether from seed or cuttings or with techniques such as layering, grafting, and budding

Creating new plants from existing ones is one of the most rewarding aspects of gardening. But to many, the idea of propagating plants seems like a feat that only the most experienced gardeners can master. The Plant Propagator’s Bible strips away the mystique and makes multiplying plants easy even for the novice.

Drawing on her many years as a horticulture teacher, Miranda Smith explains the natural process and conditions in which plants grow and reproduce, and shows gardeners how to use these systems to propagate any plant that grows in their garden or greenhouse—or even on their windowsill. The book features:

• an A to Z directory of more than 1,000 individual plant species—with appropriate propagation techniques for aquatics, ornamental plants, houseplants, shrubs, trees, vegetables, and wildflowers

• "What Can Go Wrong" advice for each type of plant, explaining potential problems and how to prevent or fix them

• detailed, step-by-step illustrations and annotated photographs

Including information on essential tools and equipment, this is an indispensable addition to every gardener’s bookshelf.

From Booklist
One of gardening's most satisfying benefits is the opportunity to create new plants from old. Many gardeners are attracted to the economics of inexpensively increasing their existing garden stock, while others relish the chance to develop brand-new hybrids. But plant propagation can intimidate even the most accomplished gardener. An experienced horticulture instructor and prolific gardening-book author, Smith demystifies propagation by providing an exceptionally well-organized and comprehensible guide to various processes, from the simple sowing of seeds to the more intricate grafting of rootstock. Color photographs and well-defined line drawings clarify step-by-step procedures, an A-Z directory of more than 1,000 plant species outlines corresponding propagation methods, and an extensive section devoted to tools and techniques furnishes helpful checklists and troubleshooting advice. Smith covers all the bases in this rudimentary and practical guide. Carol Haggas

Couldn't be happier!5
As usual, I am always thrilled when I see that AMAZON box waiting for me when I come home, but this is a book that I just could not put down. I am fairly new to gardening (I guess that makes me "green".) I have so many questions about how to help my ever-growing garden along. This book takes you step by step through every kind of plant propagating. The photos carry you through but with the clear and simple instructions your hardly need them. The format is great, the instructions are helpful, the added glossary and plant directory are outstanding. A "must have" for any new gardener as well as those who have been around for a season or two. Thanx again.

It really is a Plant Propagators Bible5
I checked this book out at our library several times before I decided I needed to own it. It's the kind of book I want to have on my bookshelf to use and refer to as needed. It is chock full of great information about various aspects of propagating and goes beyond information usually found in such a book. I was particularly interested in the section on Hybridizing and plan to try the technique this summer. It has a great section on starting seeds also, and although I've been starting seeds indoors under lights for over 15 years now, I still found the information helpful and informative.

Finally...A Practical Propagation Guide with Lots of Illustrations & "How-To's"5
I loved this book. I have investigated dozens of books on the subject of Propagation and have found this one to be the most useful & informative (without going overboard & into the chemistry lab). Filled with lots of illustrations & practical examples, it covers all aspects of propagation.

Easy to use, you'll be amazed at the results you see within a few days to a few weeks...Highly recommended for the beginners as well as experienced horticulturists...Great price.
