Weird menace at it's gory best, by the shlockmeister of all pulp publishers, RED CIRCLE. Red Circle would later gain more acclaim as the publisher of Marvel Comics. TAKE ME, AND DIE! by Arthur J. Burks How could Prestley Crane know that he would fall into the power of an old hag--a sickeningly aged harridan with a young girl's voluptuous, pulsating body--who would force this awful decision: Take me as your mate, or see your sweetheart thrown to my slavering hired thugs! or, NAMELESS BRIDES OF FORBIDDEN CITY by Frederick C. Davis Would that I could forget those nightmare hours spent in the Forbidden City! Banish the memory of that beautiful girl's body stretched on a mad cult's unholy shrine; never recall my own wild thoughts as I slowly approached her helpless, naked form, the sacrificial sword in my hand--for that pitiful victim was the mother of my son, my own adorable wife!

Customer Reviews
They don't write them like that anymore
Uncanny Tales is a great example of what are sometimes called "shudder' or "weird menace" pulps. The stories usually involve bizarre threats to half naked women by mad scientists and the like. Although their use of gender and other stereotypes may be offensive to some, the fast-paced, lurid tales are great fun if not taken seriously.
Adventure House does a nice job of packaging these with crisply reprinted text and interior illustrations. The color covers are icons of their genre. The originals of these are quite expensive so these moderately priced reprints are an affordable introduction to a fascinating byway in American writing.
