Product Description

Elementary history of Greece, made up principally of stories about persons, giving at the same time a clear idea of the most important events in the ancient world and calculated to enforce the lessons of perseverance, courage, patriotism, and virtue that are taught by the noble lives described. Beginning with the legends of Jason, Theseus, and events surrounding the Trojan War, the narrative moves on to present the contrasting city-states of Sparta and Athens, the war against Persia, their conflicts with each other, the feats of Alexander the Great, and annexation by Rome. Suitable for ages 10 to 14.

A great way to learn Greek history!5
Skip the boring, tedious textbooks! Guerber brings history facts to life in story book fashion. I am convinced that children would enjoy learning history in school if they could read from books like this rather than from textbooks. My 6th grade home-schooler read this a few chapters at a time while we were studying Ancient Greece. He always wanted to keep reading farther than what I had assigned him for that day. I highly recommend this book for 5th through 8th graders. We also enjoyed "The Story of the Romans" by the same author.

A Great Introduction to Greek History for Children5
H.A. Guerber published "The Story of the Greeks" in 1896. Her works are currently being re-issued by a number of different publishing companies. Her new found popularity is taking place because her works are free of copyright restrictions and they meet the needs of parents who are homeschooling their children. I'm lucky that my children are able to attend a very good school and I do not have to homeschool them. Nevertheless, I share the homeschooler's fascination with classical education. It is important that children learn the concrete details of history and geography starting at an early age.

"The Story of the Greeks" tracks the history of Greece from mythic times through to the absorption of Greece into the Roman Empire. H.A. Guerber wrote this book for children and she does an able job of shaping a narrative suited for children. I read this book to my six year old son and we both enjoyed it. All the important events and characters have been introduced and we will get to know them better in other children's books. After we finish up on the Greeks, we will move onto the Romans and I will purchase her book on the story of the Romans. Recommended.
