Excellent Color Source for Anyone
I've been an artist all my life and yet never really tackled watercolors.
So, since colors are the hardest part of watercolor painting, especially greens, I wanted a book that I could just glance at and have a recipe for the color I need. Sometimes you can end up with mud, or a color that clashes with your intention of the color you have in your head.
This book really helps me to just turn a page...pick a color I want and use the right combos to get the tone and hue I need.
It's a great tool. I highly recommend it for a beginner or anyone just wanting a color reference at their fingertips. It's a lot more time saving than making your own.
WARNING: Inadequate Description Above
The "Look Inside" feature (above) left out the inside of the front cover. Surprise!!! To fully use this book you must have 28 different colors to start with! There are two different disclaimers alerting you that paint colors differ from different brands and that "you may need to adjust the recipes accordingly". Perhaps I missed it, but I couldn't find anywhere what brand he used in making the book!
The text "instructions" are the epitome of minimalist information, and are of virtually no help. The 4 pages devoted to portraits seem as if they were written by someone afraid of giving away too many secrets. Example 1: for skin tones, he tells you what colors to use but the instructions then tell you to "manipulate them" or "experiment with" to get what you want. This is a book of color formulas not guess work. Example 2: for portrait features and proportions, he tells you "use a mirror to practice accurate placement of features". Then "Use a reversing mirror to see yourself as others do." Wow!
Shame on Walter Foster (publisher) for a very inadequate description and selection for us to review before buying. I'm looking for a book by someone who knows how to teach!
This is not useless. The recipes are helpful if you have all the colors. The acetate sheet for mixing is a bit of a stretch - remove it from the book and put it in a flat bottom pan.
Great Gift
Gave this as gift to friend who is new at water color painting and she told me that it is very helpful with her painting.
