Product Description

Produced in greater numbers than any other Spitfire variant, the Mark V, powered by a 12-cylinder Rolls-Royce engine, put the RAF Fighter Command on an equal playing field with the Luftwaffes Fw 190 and remained in service until the end of World War II.

As an operational history, this illustrated account tells the aircrafts story from the viewpoint of the various squadrons that flew it, drawing on pilots combat reports, firsthand anecdotes, RAF intelligence and archival photography to present a detailed account of some of the most memorable air battles over northern France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Spits in Combat - Good Show!4
Built in larger numbers than any other Spitfire variant, the Mark V saw heavy action beginning in 1941. Its combat record over northern Europe is engagingly told in Peter Caygill's book.

The Mark V was introduced as the RAF went over into the offensive in 1941, Spits escorting RAF bombers hitting targets in France. Flown by such famous pilots as Ian Gleed, Al Deere, Johnnie Walker and Don Kingaby, the Mark V ran up an enviable combat record. Then, in 1942, the Luftwaffe introduced the superlative FW 190 and Spitfire units found themselves fighting for their lives. Though later replaced by the more advanced variants, the Mark V labored on till the end of the war.

Caygill does a good job of covering the Mark V's combat career, detailing the successes and low-points. Caygill includes comments and combat reports from various pilots who flew the Mark V in 10, 11 and 12 Groups to liven up the text. Dozens of photos, some rare, help illustrate the life and times of this classic warbird.

Spitfire enthusiasts will enjoy this book. Recommended!
