Product Description

Love has been an irresistible subject for poets for thousands of years—From Catullus in ancient Rome to the most modern young poet writing today. It’s said that "all the world loves a lover" and indeed, there is a magnetic force that draws us into the magic circle of love. That’s why everyone who ever has loved, is in love, has lost love, and hopes for love will be thrilled by this collection celebrating love in all its forms. They have been chosen with care and thought from the abundant resources of American and international writing. Voices of the past such as Queen Elizabeth 1; Sir Philip Sydney; Shakespeare; Emily Dickinson, and Wallace Stevens stand alongside the newer voices of Robert Bly, Louise Glück, W.S. Merwin, Pablo Neruda, Galway Kinnell, Jane Kenyon, Adreinne Rich, Rita Dove, Billy Collins, Dorianne Laux, James Wright, and others. The diversity of voices and the uniting subject matter make this book both a pleasing and enriching read.

Customer Reviews

Lovely and Ecclectic4
I picked up a copy of this book at Urban Outfitters last weekend. I just happened to stumble across it, and immediately fell in love with the little book.

It includes love from so many different perspectives, and has an ecclectic group of poets whose work appears in this book. I was also impressed that this book wasn't biased as so many books on love are, as it includes a few poems embracing love in its non hetro form, as well as poems about the love between a man and a woman.

It also embraces so many of the different phases through which love can go through, wether it's puppy love, deep and true love, the beginning of a relationship, or loss.

My favorite poem in this book is "The Embrace" by Mark Doty, it always brings tears to my eyes.

I've brought this book along with me to school and my girlfriend, as well as my friends, have all greatly enjoyed numerous poems from this book.

It is a wonderful gift idea for a lover, or just anyone who appreciates romantic poetry.
