Customer Reviews
excellent material; examples are not so good
This a great book where in-depth discussion of techniques is concerned. However, the photographic examples provided are less useful and not inspiring, hence 4 stars. The book has helped me greatly in the darkroom though with my techniques. For informing my aesthetic sense, I can think of better titles. I also recommend Larry Bartlett's Printing Workshop for B+W Photography to supplement this book.
excellent reference
The only thing that I can find that might be seen as a negative about this book is that Tim seems to print a little darker than i like. Other than that this is without a doubt the best book on printing that I have ever read. From the first chapter on how to properly set up your enlarger through the back cover this book is all usefull. If you want to improve your printing skills this book is a must have! (...)
A good ongoing reference book
My first impression when reading the "text" of this book is that Mr. Rudman clearly understands the various ways to impact the final result of an image from start to finish. It left me with much to think about and opened my head up to possiblities that I had not previously been aware of (much less tried). To that end I applaud Mr. Rudman.
The one thing that left me a little cold about the book is probably more a matter of taste on my part. I found the examples of the prints to be very heavy, grainy and dark. To be fair, this could have occurred in the reprinting of his work for the book but, for a professional, experience printer, unexceptable.
