Product Description

One of America's foremost art collections, the Speed Art Museum in Kentucky houses masterpieces that span 6000 years, from ancient Egyptian to contemporary art. This beautifully designed book - the first comprehensive guide to the Speed to be produced for more than 20 years - provides engaging commentaries on 300 of the museum's most significant works. New colour photography throughout highlights the richness and diversity of the collection, including paintings by Rubens, Boucher, Courbet and Cassatt, and contemporary pieces by Sol LeWitt, Tony Cragg and Kiki Smith. Also featured are works from the museum's distinguished collections of decorative arts, contemporary glass, antiquities and African and Native American art. This is a superbly produced guide to one of the finest art collections in the United States. It includes works by Rembrandt, Monet and Brancusi, as well as important recent acquisitions by Cezanne, Ruisdael and Yinka Shonibare, among others. It is lavishly illustrated throughout with new colour photography.

Customer Reviews

A good surprise!4
The Speed Art Museum is one of the most pleasing small collections in America. This book is a fine sampler of some favorites, all lavishly reproduced in color and featuring intelligent commentaries about each one. The only reason that I can't recommend this book with 5 stars is that the reproductions are to small. Highlights include famous works although you may also discover some hidden gems that you were not previously aware of. If you have ever visited the museum, this book makes a fine souvenir. If you have not, it will certainly whet your appetite. For anyone intereted in art, or wishing to be, this makes a good gift.
