About the Author
Jane Harrop started making miniatures as a hobby 13 years ago and has been teaching adult education classes on making miniatures for the past nine years. This is her first book for GMC Publications, but she is the author of two books published by David & Charles in a 'Dolls House Do-it-Yourself' series: Toys and Games (2003) and Finishing Touches (2004). Jane lives in Cheshire.

Interesting, but limited
There are many projects in this book, but they're mostly for furniture, and in plain wood. More accessories would have been welcome.

And it's better suited for beginners. More experienced miniaturists might be disappointed.

What you see is what you get
I was rather disappointed when my book arrived, but perhaps I'm being a bit unfair. The front cover gives a very good indication of what is in the book, which has excellent instructions for building thirties- and forties-era furniture in the British style. I suppose that I was looking more for ideas and accessories than for furniture to build. I wanted to know how to create that look--what colors were popular then, and what little decorative bits and pieces would you find in that era. The settings are very sparse, showing pretty much only the items that the book shows you how to make--there are no complete rooms really, just little corners or single items. I was not so interested in building much wood furniture, but the emphasis here is very much on building British "Utility" furniture. I'm not sure how much of this is applicable to the United States and how useful this book will be to American readers on the whole.

That said, it's a lovely, well-produced book on nice paper. The book is beautifully illustrated, and the directions are very clear. Some of the accessories are darling. I just love the carpet sweeper, especially! Oh, and also the electric reflector fire. Both of these are easier to make, thanks to clear directions and illustrations, than you might think to look at them.

I just wanted a bit more!

interesting period details
I enjoyed this book because I've yet to seen one including much information on miniature decorating styles of the 1930's and 40's. Admittedly there are more wood crafts than I had hoped for, but the flavor of the book, the fun layout, and period details give one inspiration for creating their own unique projects.
