About Stanley PowerLock Tape Systems
With a classic design and updated features that add durability and performance, the PowerLock line of tape measures is the perfect balance between classic Stanley design and the best innovations in tool manufacture.
The Stanley Story
The Stanley Works, originally a bolt and door hardware manufacturing company located in New Britain, Connecticut; was founded in 1843 by Frederick T. Stanley. A few years later, in 1857, Frederick’s cousin, Henry Stanley, founded The Stanley Rule and Level Company. In 1920, The Rule and Level Company merged with The Stanley Works and would go on to become it’s famous Hand Tools Division. Over the years, The Stanley Works has produced some of the most innovative and useful tools ever made. Among these tools are the Bailey Plane, the Surform shaper, the PowerLock tape rule and most recently the FatMax line of products. Today, more than ever, Stanley continues to be an industry leader in tool innovation. In 2001, Stanley introduced more than 100 new products, bringing to 400 the number of new products introduced in the past four years. As a direct result of Stanley’s commitment to excellence, Stanley was awarded the Prestigious Golden Hammer Award, presented for New Product Innovation in both 2000 and 2001.

Perfect for around-the-house tasks
As something I use for home tasks and occasionally tote to a furniture store, I've never given much thought to tape measures. Mostly I've used freebies that came as a promotional item. Typically these had 1/4" blades, difficult to read markings and no locking mechanism.
On a whim one day I bought this 12' measure with a 3/4" blade, and the resulting improvement is tremendous. The wider blade is easier to extend for longer distances without it bending, and the markings are substantially easier to read. The lock is very useful for situations in which you can't apply both hands simultaneously. (I'm sure all of this is obvious to anyone who regularly uses tape measures, but to those who've just made do with whatever happened to be in the tool drawer, it's the sort of thing you wouldn't notice until you experienced the improvements.)
The Stanley is well crafted, with excellent tension for blade recall and a well-positioned locking switch. The removable belt-clip makes it especially easy to tote around.
Take one with you the next time you visit Ikea and see how many people ask to borrow it!
old faithful
Stanley are reliable . You can buy less expensive but you will have to replace them sooner. This unit is 1/2'' wide tape.
Broke after only one month
I bought this tape measure before moving into my new apartment, and it worked great at first. Very sturdy-feeling, and nice and compact. After a mere 4-5 weeks of moderate use (just a few times for furniture placement), the locking mechanism no longer locks on this tape measure, rendering it nearly useless. How ironic that they call this shoddy product "power-lock"! If only they made them like they did in the good old days. Do not buy this poorly-made tape measure. I expected more from a supposed quality name like Stanley!
