Plants are tricky things
When this little bonsai first arrived it had many leaves and was very healthy. After a few days its leaves began to dry out and it looked like it was going to die. After doing some research I found out a few things.
First thing is drastic changes in temperature (more than 20 degrees F) can affect the plant health. When you first get your plant it has to warm up to room temperature so it might lose some leaves in the beginning. Also,
I live in the northeast and during the transition to winter to spring we often will have drastic temperature changes. (Yesterday was 65, warm and sunny, today it's snowing.) I had left the tree by the window where it was cold and drafty and I noticed that some leaves began to curl up. It does not like drastic temperature changes.
Second thing is I was not watering it enough. It needs to be watered once a day consistently. To check if it needs water, stick your finger in the soil part where the roots are. If it is not moist it needs to be watered.
I have found the best watering method is to put it in the shower for a couple of minutes. This is the best because the leaves get hit with water and the rest drips down to the roots.
Also, once a week I submerge the roots/pot in water for 5 minutes. The directions suggest to do this. However, do not do this too often as the roots can be plugged with too much water and then they will die.
Then Bye bye tree.
Third thing is to take care of the dead parts if leaves do die. I pruned the dead branches and cut the dead leaves off. New leaves have begun to sprout!
Indirect light is fine for this plant, however I have noticed it grows new leaves faster if it gets 3-4 hours of direct sunlight. Be careful! Too much sun can cause it to need water again. Remember the finger test.
Plants are living things and they need care. Be wary of this if you plan to purchase this bonsai.
Misleading description, but nice plant.
The first tree I ordered was badly scarred by wires. The company replaced it quickly with a very nice tree that had a great shape. The ficus is great if you have little natural light. My apartment is very dark and the tree did fine off of the artificial light. That said, this is NOT a tree for beginners. Ficus are notoriously finicky. They like regular water and the same light conditions day after day. Each time you vary the routiine significantly, it will drop all of its leaves. Moreover, this plant was hard to water. The pot doesn't have enough room for the water to soak in, so I had to use a spray bottle and lots of patience. It needs to be watered daily.
In short: good choice if you just don't have any good light, bad, bad choice for a first Bonsai or if you are forgetful or travel.
WOW !!!!
First ...I ordered this tree and saw that it was shipping from a warm place to where I am with 6 inches of snow on the ground. It arrived within a few days, packed very securely, in great shape ready to go.
Secondly ... It was an early Christmas present, by a few weeks. There was concer with the 'WILL IT SURVIVE UNTIL CHRISTMAS' factor ... WOW ... this little tree with a few leaves on it, is going gang-busters. There's a ton of new branches, not just leaves. It looks incredible.
Third ... This is a gift that my whole family is enjoying. It's a little 'miracle' that we are monitoring closely everyday.
Thank you ... We'll be ordering more. You have created a bonsai aficionado.
Bonzai with the bonsai!
Merry Christmas.
