this cat shampoo cured husband's cat allergy
I knew my husband was VERY allergic to cats before I married him but I married him anyway. The first 10 years were hard because we could not have a cat due to his allergy/asthma. I respected that.
Then an adorable feral calico cat was born in the shrubbery next to our driveway. She was so friendly that when she was old enough to wander around without her mom, my son caught her and brought her into the house.
A battle of wills was fought and the kitten got to stay. At first when she was small, my husband's allergic response was not bad. But as she got bigger, so did his allergy problem.
On a visit to the vet, I asked "how do I make this cat hypoallergenic?" He suggested weekly baths (oh, great, we know how cats love getting wet) and this shampoo (which controls fleas as well).
I brought home the bottle of shampoo and my husband was willing to try anything, including bathing a cat, to alleviate his allergy to her. (She had won his heart but not his lungs.)
So we started washing her weekly.
A footnote on Cat Washing: Cat washing requires 2 humans for a gentle cat and 3 humans for a grumpy cat. It also requires a sink with one of those sprayers on a hose and lots of towels. If you are going to wash your cats, start when they are kittens. Adult cats strenuously (and painfully) resist being washed for the first time. Most cats do not like hair dryers so you must keep cat in the house after bath until dry. Suggest sitting with towels over lap if you don't want to have wet pants.
Back to the main plot line: After her bath, my cat was hypoallergenic -- my husband had no allergic symptoms when she was clean. She could sleep on his head and it did not bother him. At the end of the week, the allergic symptoms started again. Time to wash the cat.
As time went by my husband noticed that at the end of the week he was not having any allergy symptoms. Since washing even a gentle cat is not a joyful experience, we moved to cat baths every two weeks. This worked well for my husband for a while. Then he noticed that at the end of two weeks, no allergy symptoms.
Needless to say, the time between baths was slowly extended until the point that my husband was not allergic to our cat (freshly washed or dirty) nor any cat at all. He could visit my mother and her 5 cats without having to escape for his life after 1/2 hour.
We continue to wash our cats (even the ones that REALLY HATE it) periodically with this shampoo because it does a really good job on fleas. It's a nice complement to Frontline if your cats have a serious flea problem or allergy to fleas (yes, I have a cat who is allergic to fleas and I have no desire to make fleas hypoallergenic). Wash the cat, then when they are dry, put on the Frontline. It smells better than Frontline too.
Weekly usage of this product will leave you with a hypoallergenic flealess cat: suitable for all kinds of company (and husbands).
